Carmen posted on Household Hints  For cleaning caste iron, stove grates or any other item that has baked on grease: Put in a plastic trash back with rags soaked in ammonia. Seal and leave over night. The next day your stuff will come clean with little rubbing. For caste iron, be sure to re-season it.

When I got my new stove, the directions said not to use steel wool on the grates. What? I finally found this answer and it works!

Balogreene  In the olden days, my ggrandmother and grandmother, put cast iron in the wood stove, lit the fire and burned it clean. My dad always put it in the incinerator in the backyard. After going through fire it looked like new. Then you re seasoned it. I've done the same in the fireplace.

BirdsNest  Nice to know, I have a pan that needs cleaning. And saw a cast iron skillet at the thrift store that I may get if it's still there, it could use this procedure. Thanks.

Escaped commieny  I like Tam, I know I posted her first video months ago. I got a nice 5 qt dutch oven my brother was throwing out. I soaked it in vinegar and then did the oven cleaner bag thing. I 'roasted' it in the weber to season ( we are under fire alert no outside fires )but instead of elbow grease used my cordless drill with a wire brush

Carmen posted on Recipes  Well, I don't have a recipe here but didn't know any place else to RANT! Twice now I bought avocados because they are now finally affordable. (2 for $1.00 and even less some places. ) All but one are brown on the inside. I wrote to Calavo to complain but got no response. They could be cheap as dirt now and I won't waste my money.

Carmen posted on Gardening & Landscaping  If you have never tried Winter Sowing with this method, give it a try. I have been doing this for 7 years now and it is the way I start all of my perennials and some of the annuals if I have enough milk jugs. Right now I have 35 milk jugs out on the patio covered with snow and ice. It is exciting when they all start to germinate and I don't have to mess with starting things indoors under lights.

Carmen posted on Gardening & Landscaping  I have a border of those around the base of my house on the south side (one foot from the house - in that space I have English Ivy that climbs up the basement wall ). In the cement blocks I plant lots of different lettuces and it works great. Also, in some of them I start perennials.

Escaped commieny  that's OK, we got ya, I am looking at this since my brother and I are trying to decide how to utlize the little space we have between our two fences. We have a 13x24 area that his monster pits, and my prolific poopers have not had access to, so we want to fence it off for a mutual garden. He wants raised beds, and I want a truck load of Black Cow ( the best fert. there is ) and till on the gound. Talking to Flaming Sword about this. L

BirdsNest  EC, you may want to consider vertical gardening for some of your plants like cukes, peas,beans...saves space. And especially space saver plants.

Carmen posted on Gardening & Landscaping  I'm starting dwarf cherry type tomato seeds on top of the frig now with the hope of having cherry tomatoes in the winter. I have a huge bank of south-facing windows and don't want to use extra lighting so I hope they will fruit. (I planted 'Tiny Tim' and 'Red Robin' because they can be grown in gallon pots. ) I've never tried growing them inside before but I have a hot pepper plant that just thrives in those windows. Same family so I hope it works. I'm in NW IL

Carmen posted on Gardening & Landscaping  Does anyone here 'Winter Sow'? I got into this about 6 years ago and look forward to each January to start a bunch of perennials outdoors. Using gallon milk jugs works best for me and the best results come when we have a good snow cover to completely cover the jugs until spring. See the website if you are interested. It makes seed starting very easy without indoor lights, etc.

Hagar  Birdsnest had just seen the "Victory Garden" on TV, the episode about growing and processing your own horseradish!
Well we had planted some roots and they were 3 years old, so armed with the working knowledge of how and what I dug the roots. BN washed and scraped the skin off the roots(so far, so good )She takes out the blender just like on TV, she cut the roots in to 2" pieces, added white vinegar and blended it. HOWEVER, she must of missed the part when the TV host said, "Don't take the lid off and stick your face over the top and inhale".
She got chemical pneumonia and was sick for 10 days.
Was some of the best horseradish I ever ate!!

Carmen posted on Gardening & Landscaping  This is a great source for open pollinated tomato and pepper seeds if you are fine with getting only 10 seeds or so ($1.25 per pack ). She has a great variety and you can save your seeds for following years. (I have tomato seeds in the frig that are still viable after 7 years. ) She also sells other veggies and flower seeds.
