Happy birthday, Lucianne. May you be filled with God's blessing.

Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  Oy! The ads on the mother site seem to have gone from annoying to harassing. When the page is scrolled, the side bar ads scroll themselves back into view. Together with the ads embedded in the site content (which do scroll with the content ), they're becoming the dominant feature of the page, more so than the content, itself.

That might not be so insufferable if the ads, themselves, weren't among the grossest caricatures of stupid tabloid trash, good f***ing grief!!!

StormCnter  I just ignore them, Kono. With other news sites demanding adblockers be disabled before we can view anything, the Lucianne site isn't any worse than those. It's just too much trouble to go through all the steps to eliminate the Lucianne ads and then the steps frequently have to be repeated next time.

Kono  I appreciate your effort to talk me off the ledge (metaphorically speaking ), StormCntr.

Maybe you can just ignore them, even though they counter every move of the window to get back into the center of view. But I can't. They're as bad as the embedded videos on sites like sfgate or DM (which fly to the screen's corner if scrolled out of view, and if closed there by the user, retreat to their original place in PLAY mode, requiring another insistent GO AWAY click to stop them (pause ).

A $50/year subscription to an ad-free experience here would be well worth it. But that option isn't offered. Resistance is futile.

Escaped commieny  What are using for a browser ?? I use Firefox with Adblock Plus and all permissions denied and never have any ads. Do you have the little i in a circle ( info ) click and deny permissions. Just block every thing. We covered this months ago, you may have to scroll way down on the Tech Issue wall. I rarely check in, for a few favorite posters, but occasionally see who are having trouble so hope that wall helps.

Texastealady  I'm here today for just this reason. Haven't been here in awhile and wanted to see if anyone else HATES those ads! Worse, one of those sites thinks I'm a man "seeking a ____woman" Fill in the blank, today it's an Arab woman in Portland which is a small town about 40 miles from where I live. Ye Gods! FIRST I'm a W O M A N and I like/love men. It's driving me crazy = oh, and my browser is Firefox and I have uBlock Origin and Adblock Plus and AdBlocker Ultimate for good measure. PUHLEESE HELP!!!!

Kono  Thanks for your efforts to guide a few desperate ad-fleeing souls, Escaped.

The ads harass me in both firefox and brave; no matter how I tweak the settings on adblock plus and ghostery. Clicked the circle 'i' in firefox and the info window that came up said there were no permissions in existence for that page; and I suppose I can only deny permissions that are there, unless this is a deeper metaphysical mystery than the musings of Karl Rahner (a concept that makes me smile - thanks ).

Tulsa  I'm in FF with ABP (Adblock Plus ) and have no ads. Lucianne said some people see them and some don't. It depends on your browser, your settings and having ABP.

EC is correct. There are directions to eliminate them under site settings.

Tulsa  Texastealady, too many adblockers fight. They cancel out each other. Adblock Plus will do nicely and then do what EC suggested and go to site permissions and deny all.

Go to the computers and tech wall and scroll down and click next page (go back ) until you find the discussion on site permissions. You might do the same on this page as we've had discussions here on the same subject.

It may be many pages back, but it's there. Just look. Very best wishes.

Kono posted on Computers &Tech Issues  Crawling into walking in the Brave new world.

Does any Brave user here know how to make save-page actually SAVE the page, as in downloading the images and other items that make the saved page viewable offline? (This is the default way of saving pages on firefox. ) Not every page I consider a keeper will remain forever on the site where I found it, either; and I want to be able to see the page after its site of origin decides to move, delete, or modify their version.

I can't find a setting or option that appears to do this. And searching through their help for about an hour turned up nothing that even mentions the issue.

StormCnter  Kono, there are two methods. You can click on File (at the upper left of your Brave page ), choose Save As. The second method which works anywhere, not only on Brave is to right click your mouse and then choose Save As. With each method, you only have to decide where you want the saved item to go.

Tulsa  Two ad blockers will fight and you will have ads. I read that somewhere long ago. Iows, more is not better.

Check your settings on Brave. I think they are under
Edit at the bottom of that window. Make certain pop ups are blocked. I get frustrated when I'm unfamiliar with a browser. I haven't had to use Brave in a long time, so it needs a tune up. Go thru each option and set them. It is worth your time as ads are here to stay. You'll also find it will tell you it needs (can't remember the word ) click ok or yes and you will be removed from whatever site you are visiting when it ? (refreshes/recalibrates...I'm blank at the moment ) It only takes seconds and doesn't happen often.

Tulsa  Ok, Lucky5. Chrome is a browser. Brave is a browser. No ads with Brave. If you are using Chrome and getting ads, stop using Chrome. I think? that's what you said.

Kono  Thanks for the hot tip. Seeing the compliments from users here motivated me to try the brave browser.

I downloaded it but can't find anything that shows the layout of the window and where to find things like bookmarks. The three-dot icon at upper right offers to open bookmark list for editing, but shows no bookmarks at all even after telling it to import all my firefox settings (and yes, after turning firefox off like the instructions say to do ).

For me, getting started means showing the basic window layout, not how to set up payments (which is the only hit a search for 'getting started' or 'overview' finds ). I'll look at it again later; but right now I'm plumb out of patience.
January 22 at 11:53 EST .

Tulsa  There is no charge. Brave is free. It took 2 tries to download/transfer bookmarks to Brave from FF and from Edge.

I'm currently in Brave. Across the top of the page it reads: File, Edit (where you will find settings ) View, History, Bookmarks (aka favorites from FF and Edge or whatever browser you download )Shields (don't know what that is and don't care ) Window (I also ignore this one ) and Help

Everything you need. Set up is more simple than FF. All under 'settings' which is under EDIT.

Maybe rest and go at it fresh another time. Read up on Brave. That's how I learned how to use it. I just kept reading until things 'dawned' on me bc I can be extremely obtuse and I'm so right brain I need a map to the left brain. I am so not technical. I don't like or enjoy this stuff. Not at all. It is simply necessary as I don't want a tech constantly at the house.

Hope something I typed helps, Kono.

Lonestar Jack  I have used Brave for a long time since White Hat Security issued the following statement:

The WhiteHat Aviator™ Web Browser

Thank you to everyone who has supported and used Aviator! WhiteHat Security has received tremendous support and feedback for the project since it’s launch in October 2013. In January 2015, we decided to make Aviator an open source project, making it possible for the community to continue to build on it. WhiteHat Security will no longer be providing support or development resources for Aviator.

Both are excellent and really speedup those sites with lots of Javascript goodies and images.

Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  Admittedly being only an occasional participant here, I don't know whether Lakerman1 hangs out here. But he mentioned on the mother site yesterday that today's his 79th birthday. And I wanted to stop by here, where socializing is not discouraged, to wish him special birthday blessings.
I've a real problem retaining names I don't use every day (even my own! ), so I only remember a dozen or so Ldotters by-name. And he's one I have come to recognize over the years as a real credit to the Ldotter community (along with you who contribute here all the time, like Phooey, MeiDei, Gram, StormCtr, et al ).
Name-nesia notwithstanding, I hold y'all in highest regard.
Happy birthday Lakerman1, and a blessed Epiphany Sunday to you all.

Kono  Thanks for both of these. I'm not sure whether the disabling of that user-wall-search feature was because it broke or because it presented trolling / harassment capability. But now that the Connection has become a living memorial to its founder (brother Joshua, Rest In Peace ), fixes or new features become issues of honoring his memory even more than issues of technical feasibility.

Kono posted on Computers &Tech Issues  In all candor, as pathologically-ad-averse as I am, the persistent inattention to the SSL certificate problem (on this and the mother site ) is a FAR bigger issue.

Now that the support staff has beaten back the prevalent ad blockers, could they show one iota of concern for the insecure authentication here?

Tulsa  Kono, 2 things. I read about the Brave browser. No ads. It's out of beta. This is their first edition. The set up is much like Firefox only more features are built in. A former Mozilla/Firefox employee (not certain which ) created it. No ads. No tracking. https://www.brave.com/ Several people here already knew about it.

I wrote Luis a long time ago about the certificate. No response. If more people write him or Lucianne, perhaps they will address it. Their emails are on the home page under 'contact'...top of the page in the box.

Kono  Mysteriously, this morning all the ads that made the mother site so ugly for the past week or two are no longer there.

The ad-deployment technique that evaded blocking looked pretty impervious to me, so as much as I'd love to hear that ABP caught up to them with a new detection/filter technique, I'm inclined to guess that LCom staff (maybe even our dear Lucianne, herself ) decreed a back-out of the ad code to the earlier method (that ABP was capable of handling ).

Even if this is just a one-day reprieve, I'm grateful for the freedom to read news without having to mentally block out the visually-disturbing images every page, at least for the moment...

Tulsa  I wrote Luci and Luis 9:50 am EDT. I told her there had been complaints about the SSL Certificate and that I encouraged posters to write her and Luis, not to just post problems to other Ldotters. I told her we all hate the ads, but understand she has to do what she has to do to keep the site open.

The site still is not secure, but I hope and pray they are working on it.

You can download the Brave browser if the ads return. No ads and no tracking. I use it and several others here do.

ABP is being paid to whitelist ads. They do block anything that flashes and blinks. I can't go to Drudge without ABP. It's a nightmare there.

Agree. Even one day without ads is a good thing. They are an assault to the senses and a big distraction. They drive people away.

GO3  My thoughts from a business case perspective. Response on technical issues for the connection vs. LDot don't rate very high because not very many participate here. If I'm going to expend bucks and expertise it will default to the mother ship. Nothing against LDot or Luis, but I would think it's just a matter of priorities. For example, I've had no resolution on the avatar issue, but oh well, that's the way it goes. I use ad blocker and still get the ads and I just ignore it and move on. One other thing. These "ads" are not traditional ads as we've seen before. These are pushed out to websites by outfits such as Taboola which is paid money by other media and commercial establishments to blast this stuff out as click bait to get a handle on viewing habits and what content at what sites grab people's attention. That kind of mapping is big money so it's hard to resist cashing in on the ads. JMO.

Kono posted on Computers &Tech Issues  Today the ugly ads showed up on the mothersite again, and the usual tricks (flushing browser cache, updating adblock filters and reloading ) did not make them go away.
Is that afflicting anybody else here?

Or, more to the point, was anybody else able to regain ad-free-ness?

To be fair, if the site's operators would put the effort in to make the logins here SAFE, I might be willing to tolerate the ugly ads...
