Tianne posted on Main Page The Lobby  What a wonderful job you have done, Luis. Thank you so much.

Holeymoses  So much invested in this past election, that it is taking time to regroup. I don't want to believe that America has started its decline. I suppose the real question is whether we will be a strong or weak minority, buy minority we are. So much for the 'melting pot.'

Tianne posted on Main Page The Lobby  Happy New Year and thank you - thank you to all current military personnel and veterans. May your new year be filled with every blessing and with warm, sweet times with all of those dear to you. And, especially for those who have lost beloved ones:

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God".

Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee

MaxWedge  Back in the "old days" when television stations would sign off for the night, didn't they play this? I loved it.

Yes they did.
(Pilot Officer Magee was killed in a mid-air collision with a friendly ac ).
And then they would show the flag and play the "Stars Spangled Banner" and sign off.

Flygal  I would also say a prayer for those who died trying to save others here at home, such as fire and EMS; a heart transplant team was killed in a helicopter crash en route to pick up a heart to give someone a new life. Very sad...

Tianne posted on Main Page The Lobby  Have been unable to be here for awhile so may have missed some new rules. Is there a reason why the Republican debate that's occurring right now isn't being discussed here?

Thwarkmaster  There will be plenty of discussion once the thing is over.
The snarky little Politico jerk is there just to attack Rick Perry. Perry just said he feels like a pinata. The leftists want Romney. All the questions are in part designed to support their boy.

Tianne  When the Democrats have their debate (assuming someone will have the courage to confront Obama ), it would only be fair to have two rabid conservatives as moderators. These two supercilious, egotistical moderators are disgraceful.

Thwarkmaster  Good cop/bad cop. The Celtics had a guy named Greg Kite who would come into the game when the Celts were in trouble. I don't know if Kite could actually play basketball at all; he would just run up and down the court, tripping, biting, scratching, and kicking members of the opposing team. The Politico dweeb is following those tactics, while Williams is Mr. Polite.
Any candidate who wants to take issue with Perry gets the last word, while Perry is blocked from answering charges from the other candidates. Why Republicans submit to this cheesy stuff is still a big mystery. Williams and the punk are there to damage Perry, end of story.

Rick Perry just sucked up to Obama, thanks to Barry 'taking out' Osama he has respect for him.

Belwhatter  Kevin Dujan [Hillbuzz] was running a live blog up until the Telemundo guy was brought on. Best moments, Newt chastizing the moderators for stirring up dissent between the pubbie candidates, and Herman Cain's wonderful answers all brief with wit and commom sense.Bachman shafted -
Perry the target, no love lost between Paul and Perry or Mittens and Perry. The rest- you can keep them.

Tianne posted on Main Page The Lobby  It is just so heartbreaking to see the water gushing from the opened floodgates in Louisiana - flooding homesteads, farms that have been in families for generations. Now those people forced to evacuate won't be able to return to their homes and farms for weeks to assess damage. Did anyone see the report about the FEMA trailers that were supplied for the survivors of Katrina and later purchased by a private company that now have to be relocated because of the opened floodgates? It's all such madness. Prayers for all of the dear people who have to wait patiently to see if they will have homes to return to. This is just a reckless comment from me, but are the cities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans really worth the physical and mental sacrificial devastation caused to their neighbors by purposeful flooding by the Army Corps of Engineers? It all just seems so unfair....

Ynaught  I've struggled with the same feelings, Tiane. Like Solomon choosing which baby to save? This one can't be cut in half and this one won't have a satisfactory solution in any case. Is doing nothing the best choice? The circle of life...? I pray that the best decisions for the most people are made without regard to political consequences.

Cap MarineTet68  As carefully explained on the Mothership by jhsmom, the decision was not about which group of Louisiana citizens and towns should get preference. It is about saving the Mighty Mississippi. Its deep channel is the thoroughfare for unbelievably massive amounts of commerce. A look at a map shows that once it diverts to the Atchafalaya, it's not going back. And the Atchfalaya is not big enough to contain it, nor the commerce it carries.
Therefore: Failure to do anything would result in the big river jumping over and creating massive amounts of uncontrolled and unrecoverable wreckage.

And the "longer than a few weeks" is merely soft-peddling hard news. The spring rains and snowpack runoff will make this a problem well into June.

Clipped wings  Cap, you are so right. Unfortunately our people and media and only attuned to the sensational events. They consider anything, whether tornado destruction, earthquakes, floods, or bloody murders on for the current news cycle, then off to new topics. They don't report how these events have ongoing effects.
