BirdsNest www.survivalblog.com Books by John Wesley Rawles are a good way to start. This guy had some really good stories and ideas when he was trying to survive in Argentina, he has since moved to Ireland. http://www.ferfal.blogspot.com/ In your searches online stick to words like homesteaders and homesteading so you will avoid the nutjob sites.

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby This is a service to my fellow L-Dotters who avoid the late night shows. I was channel surfing, and set to go past the Leno show, when I stopped, stunned. The guest was Daniel Craig, and he was dressed neatly in a quietly tasteful suit, dress shirt and tie. Not only that he was well groomed; no disheveled hair, unkempt beard, foul mouth, liberal BS. He dressed as if was proud to be there, and every time Leno left an opening for a lewd remark, he politely demurred. Good grief, are there any more like him? I might start going to the movies again!!

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby The latest shooting atrocity has, as expected, brought out the anti gun zealots. But I wonder--- has anybody ever researched other possible causes? How many smoked weed? How many of these vicious young men were raised without religion or other ethical values? How many grew up on Ritalin or other mind altering drugs? How many spent their young lives in day care centers so mommy could be "fulfilled" ? How many had rooms filled with x boxes, violent computer games, churning through the garbage of Facebook, twitter, etc? Just wondering.

Rollingcow Well, now, except for smoking weed or taking anything mind altering you could be talking about any number of young men that I know. All of them are leading productive lives with jobs, wives and children, most attend church now that their 'rebellious years' are over. Being a stay at home Mom isn't always possible and has nothing to do with Mommy being fulfilled it's a matter of putting bread on the table. The real tragedy here is that the families can't turn on the television or pick up a newpaper in hopes of a little escape without seeing everyone and their dog discussing who was right and who was wrong or why this guy did what he did. It's time we started to pay some attention to how we treat these young men with mental issues of whatever sort. It's time we quit trying to live in some sort of Utopia about being nice to one another or offending someone. Pointing fingers at video games or movies is just as stupid as someone telling me my guns are running the streets when I'm not looking killing people willy-nilly. Having said my piece I'm letting it go so that I can go enjoy my grandbabies during the holidays and thank God that they are here so that I can do just that. We should all spend a little time in prayer asking for comfort from our Savior for the families. Mrs. Cow

Rake King A big 10-4 to Mrs. Cow. She and I grew up in times when we made most of our toys, read real printed books and had juicy imagainations. Todays "Things" are instantly discarded after a few hours of use, as parents (who now seem to both be working ) try to please their children with "STUFF" and an organized daily routine. Not everyone, but too many for all of our good. We are branded as "old fashioned", out of date, and unable to set up a cell phone. Well they could do a lot worse. To see movies that pumped up dreams, to have someone who hugs them, and to just have some free time to sit and think about the world, life, and the future. Our kids today are in every sport you can think of, constantly on the go as a result, and so are their parents. STRESS! This is the time of year to enjoy family, a great dinner and conversation...and most of all watch the faces of our grandchildren filled with excitement. Slow down and enjoy those moments and don't be bashful to tell them some stories from your past. Half of the things I learned about life was sitting on the back porch talking to my grandfather. Just remember, no matter how little you have, you are better off than 75% of the rest of the world. Thank your God and dole out as many hugs as you can.

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby I just read about Hilary's heroic battle with flu and resulting faint and fall with head injury. Of course she can't testify, and she will be unable to remember a thing about Benghazi if she is required to testify. How unfortunate. How sad. How convenient.

Dixonnh There's probably a legal aspect to her testifying shortly after having suffered a concussion. I'm sure they've researched all this. We had been warned that she may not testify. The length some will go to........

Linder Don't you just hate it when someone is lying to you and you know it's a lie but can't prove it? The first elected Republican who questions the veracity of her medical excuse will be crucified by Dems, liberal women and MSM...and so it won't be done and she will not testify and their lies will once again succeed.

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby My senator, Jim DeMint, has resigned and will head up the Heritage Foundation. Hope and pray this is a shot across the bow directed at McConnell, Boehner, and the rest of the useless, self serving old guard GOP. Boehner firing all the Tea Party members from their committee positions probably triggered the decision. This could be the start of a rebellion: the new true conservatives vs. the defeatist old poops.

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby I have a question about tax law that I hope someone can answer. When my niece and her husband were given the use of a mid-town Manhattan apartment as a perk, she had to get a job to pay the tax levy (the apartment was valued at $6000 per month ) determined by the IRS. How much does a president pay in taxes for the use of what most would call a palace? With valets, chefs, housekeepers, maids, gardeners, chauffeurs? How about travel, greens fees, entertainment ? Parties? If these perks were taxed, prez and family might be more frugal. Anybody know how this works? Or do we indeed have the royalty now the Founding Fathers abhorred?

Bettijo Politicians follow a different set of rules than us peons. Haven't you noticed? Remember, they exempted themselves from Obamacare. Some individual politicians exempt themselves from income tax; i.e. our Treasury Secretary for one. Remember Pelosi's 747 for personal use.....bet she never paid a dime in income tax for that perk.

Rake King Why is it also that criminals are always identified with a middle name i.e. James "Earl" Ray, while the rest of us are simply Joe Brown?

Rollingcow I used to wonder about that as well, RK, but some recent time spent at the courthouse revealed that it's the way the names are written on the paperwork. I would imagine that the 'reporters' get the names from the offical documents there. Mrs. Cow

Yottyhere MrsC is correct as far as down here in middle GA is concerned. Names at the courthouse are called out by the 3 names .....Joe Brown then becomes Joe Sidney Brown or Jo Michelle Brown or J'o Kawanis Brown...... If Buzzard or I ever got arrested we might "possibly" get the 3 name treatment or not.....

Nugoddess Using the middle name is how we know we're in trouble here in the south, Yotty. My mom would yell, ''Nu Getyerbacksideinherethisminute Goddess! Come 'mere!'' And that's when I would head for the hills. You don't want your mama calling your middle name in the south. Uh-uh!

Yottyhere My Mom always called our first name and middle as one.... if I heard yottymarie I hauled arse to the house in a blink! My Irish Grammy referred to me as MissyGirl (she didn't care for me a lot she thought I was too GDI for her tastes LOL ) but whenever I heard her voice call MissyGirl I always went and hid. Her favorite mode of punishment was biting ears. I use to have nightmares about her biting my ears completely off :(

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby Does anybody have any idea how many people work in government jobs;, city, county, state and federal? I cannot imagine a one them voting to reduce the size of government. Combine that with the millions who have only survived because of government programs doling out food and housing with no effort required in exchange, and you have your new majority. Also, could we get rid of the notion that "all men are created equal?" At least half of the population is pretty damn dumb, and the Dems have learned how to control them. Sigh.

Tulunk posted on Main Page The Lobby I love the cartoon on the main page and do hope that Clint Eastwood knows what a beautiful stroke of genius he had with the "Empty Chair President." And the "intellectuals" on both sides were sooooo judgmental of the old man's attempt at humor. He was miles ahead of the wise ones, and his empty chair will be remembered long after their smirking faces. Go, Clint!!!
