Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  Nice political cartoon on the LCom home page today. It might make more sense to have the caption be "Military / Civilian" than as "Foreign / Domestic". But maybe that's just me being picky.

Kono posted on Computers &Tech Issues  In all candor, as pathologically-ad-averse as I am, the persistent inattention to the SSL certificate problem (on this and the mother site ) is a FAR bigger issue.

Now that the support staff has beaten back the prevalent ad blockers, could they show one iota of concern for the insecure authentication here?

Tulsa  Kono, 2 things. I read about the Brave browser. No ads. It's out of beta. This is their first edition. The set up is much like Firefox only more features are built in. A former Mozilla/Firefox employee (not certain which ) created it. No ads. No tracking. https://www.brave.com/ Several people here already knew about it.

I wrote Luis a long time ago about the certificate. No response. If more people write him or Lucianne, perhaps they will address it. Their emails are on the home page under 'contact'...top of the page in the box.

Kono  Mysteriously, this morning all the ads that made the mother site so ugly for the past week or two are no longer there.

The ad-deployment technique that evaded blocking looked pretty impervious to me, so as much as I'd love to hear that ABP caught up to them with a new detection/filter technique, I'm inclined to guess that LCom staff (maybe even our dear Lucianne, herself ) decreed a back-out of the ad code to the earlier method (that ABP was capable of handling ).

Even if this is just a one-day reprieve, I'm grateful for the freedom to read news without having to mentally block out the visually-disturbing images every page, at least for the moment...

Tulsa  I wrote Luci and Luis 9:50 am EDT. I told her there had been complaints about the SSL Certificate and that I encouraged posters to write her and Luis, not to just post problems to other Ldotters. I told her we all hate the ads, but understand she has to do what she has to do to keep the site open.

The site still is not secure, but I hope and pray they are working on it.

You can download the Brave browser if the ads return. No ads and no tracking. I use it and several others here do.

ABP is being paid to whitelist ads. They do block anything that flashes and blinks. I can't go to Drudge without ABP. It's a nightmare there.

Agree. Even one day without ads is a good thing. They are an assault to the senses and a big distraction. They drive people away.

GO3  My thoughts from a business case perspective. Response on technical issues for the connection vs. LDot don't rate very high because not very many participate here. If I'm going to expend bucks and expertise it will default to the mother ship. Nothing against LDot or Luis, but I would think it's just a matter of priorities. For example, I've had no resolution on the avatar issue, but oh well, that's the way it goes. I use ad blocker and still get the ads and I just ignore it and move on. One other thing. These "ads" are not traditional ads as we've seen before. These are pushed out to websites by outfits such as Taboola which is paid money by other media and commercial establishments to blast this stuff out as click bait to get a handle on viewing habits and what content at what sites grab people's attention. That kind of mapping is big money so it's hard to resist cashing in on the ads. JMO.

Kono posted on Computers &Tech Issues  Today the ugly ads showed up on the mothersite again, and the usual tricks (flushing browser cache, updating adblock filters and reloading ) did not make them go away.
Is that afflicting anybody else here?

Or, more to the point, was anybody else able to regain ad-free-ness?

To be fair, if the site's operators would put the effort in to make the logins here SAFE, I might be willing to tolerate the ugly ads...

Tulsa  On a pc, in Win. 10, using Firefox with Adblock Plus, I simply click refresh and the ads disappear. If I exit and return later I must click refresh again to remove the ads.

I guess this could stop working any time, but so far so good

Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  I have memories of members of the FakeStreamMedia issuing apologies a few days after the election for misreporting the poll results and distorting the campaign news in general... and promising that they would clean up their act.

Am I just imagining that memory? Did anybody else hear/read that at the time? Did their promise last more than two days before they were right back at their old tricks? Has the amount of bogus reporting gone up or down since they made that promise?

Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  I don't know if rosefenn ever hangs out here (didn't it used to let us go to other users' walls? ). But I wanted to offer a word of thanks for posting on the mothersite today that piece about the sandhill cranes at their migration stopover on the Platte River.

The reason given for the post being closed was that it's not a news site.

Bull puckey.

The Omaha World Herald is Omaha's main newspaper. While not the biggest newspaper in the country, it is most definitely a news site. And I'm most definitely happy to see the reminder of how neat the Sand Hills of Nebraska can be during the crane migrations each year.

Someone, who shall remain nameless, complained and had him banned, at that point many posters quit. And some quit the Connection, when RakeKing was banned, for no apparent reason.

3XALADY  Just popped in on my way to start some household chores and thought I would say 'hey.' I'm the former Betty Jean, as ECNY knows. She so graciously offered me her home when I was in FL that year the hurricanes were chasing all of us. She mentioned Rake King and I am wondering if he is still with us. Seems I saw that he had been ill. He was so very nice and knew what I was talking about when I wrote about the scissor sharpener cart the guy would push on the streets in St. Louis all those years ago, with a bell clanging at a certain spot when the wheel turned. I've re-settled to Warrenton, MO to be close to niece who is my remaining family since I lost my DH last May. The sunshine has left my life and I'm trying to move on, but you will never know how you will handle it until you go thru it. I pop on here once in awhile just to see how things are going, on lucianne every morning. When I was packing for my move, I found the email where I signed up for lucianne dated August 1990. Or was it 2000? Can't remember but it was when AlGore was trying to steal the election from GWB. Thanking God every day for our president, but kind of disappointed in him the last couple of days for calling out the Freedom Caucus for their stand on the healthcare 'makeover'. Pffffffft on Paul Eddie Munster Ryan and all his cohorts on this bill.

Escaped commieny  Heard from Rake at Christmas and he was doing well, had finally retired at 82. He was sad they had to sell the biz his parents started, and he called on Sam Walton, before the 5&10¢ store turned into Walmart, he has fantastic stories to tell and never should have been kicked off this site, GRRR. Hey Betty, DH just crossed into MO, told him to give you a wave !

3XALADY  Hey, Gurl! So glad to hear Rake is still up and going and I do remember his wonderful stories about their company. Did he not have kids to inherit? Or maybe the kids didn't want to inherit. I was reading on the Faith wall and so sorry to hear of your health issue. If I were still in Florida, I would be right over to take care of you as you go thru this. Bless your heart! An aside: I read somewhere that in an area of this country saying 'bless your heart' had a very bad meaning. But I ignore that as I've used it all my long life. Which side of MO is DH coming in on? I'm about an hour west (I think ) of St. Louis toward Kansas City, in the country. Haven't lived where I had to drive to get a gallon of milk in over 50 years but I guess I'll live. Just thankful my sweet niece wanted to bother with me in my old age. She has a 4 year old (I pray for patience! ) and a 4 month old so life is not boring. I am in the lower level of her beautiful atrium home on 15 acres. Spring is springing and I'm getting anxious to start planting spring bulbs for next year's bloom. I got used to having blooms all year in Florida and missed them after I moved at the end of September. Hoping DH has a safe trip until you see him again, and God bless you with speedy healing. I've reconnected with a friend who has battled lymphoma and she said it wasn't easy. God bless you, friend.

There are many kinds of lymphoma, my Dad had it for 14 yrs, but mine is a B-Cell Low grade stage 4,so no cure, remission for 5 yrs is the best they have to offer right now. Chemo Starts 4/11.
DH is on his way to Nebraska Furniture, Kansas City,Kansas then will be home for me the 10th.
His Schneider hub is Atlanta and with the hwy collapse, the unbearable traffic will be beyond words.

Kono  With the end of my Presidency, I've agreed with Michelle that we will change places. We have a bet between us about whose two terms will wind up being better. I fooled her, though; because I actually WANT to be Ethel Merman for a week, so I'm hoping her 8 years as President will be better than mine were.

Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  One of the things I had HOPEd would CHANGE during Obama's time in office was the way the First Couple seemed to have no use for carrying themselves in public with the dignity befitting the leaders of this country (much less the leaders of the world, as some spoke of Barry and Mooch ). I see this stuff and it projects pandering rather than projecting pride and strength.

Kono posted on Main Page The Lobby  Blessings to y'all on this day before official election day.

Today's the second time in a week I can recall seeing the political cartoonist whose work is featured on the mother site's must-reads (today's panel attached to this post ). Can anybody tell me what those cheek buttons are supposed to be on the Hillary portrayal? So many of the political cartoons feature praiseworthy caricatures of her; but this one looks vaguely like a ventriloquist's dummy to me, and I wondered whether I was the only one who got that impression...

And that's Robert Ariail. He's 'famous' in South Carolina (my home state ). He's award winning. But, he is also often infuriatingly liberal ...and then again he is sometime brilliant.

It's the strangest thing.

I read him daily at GoComics only bc I read him daily at home when we took The State paper. It was like reading Lewis Grizzard. A daily must.
