Mildred posted on Computers &Tech Issues  Anyone else having problems logging on to Lucianne? Recently, whether the home page or the connection, it takes forever to open. I've tried using IE and Firefox and both are extremely slow. In fact sometimes it won't open at all. First it was just Saturday afternoon, now it's almost every time I try to open it. It's really annoying.

Mildred posted on Main Page The Lobby  I stopped visiting Lucianne as frequently once we could not block the obnoxious ads when using AdBlockPlus with Internet Explorer. Other commenters said to use Firefox and AdBlockPlus and you can actually block the ads. I returned (by mistake )to Lucianne using Internet Explorer and I can't believe the pornographic type ads that now appear on Lucianne. When I first started reading Lucianne it was a great site. What happened to it? Goodbye Lucianne.

Tulsa  Mildred, on Sept. 14 I posted a critical bulletin about IE and Edge on the computer page. Edge is replacing IE. There were 22 issues with both. 22. Twenty Two. IE is the least safe browser available. I've urged you to never use it. Your pc could be destroyed.

I don't have ads in Firefox. I turn ABP off daily to view the cartoon and then turn it right back on.

You're missed. Best wishes.

StormCnter  No one is stuck with IE as the only browser. Other browsers are free and many of them are far better than IE. I use Firefox for Lucianne with AdBlockPlus and I have never seen the offensive ads Mildred mentions. It's too bad Mildred is giving up. She doesn't have to do so.

Tulsa  aaargh where did my post go!

Not inspect element, right click adblock ad or adblock bar, then on prechecked screen check add to list.

I think you have simply forgotten the drill. Stay in FF and forget IE and you'll be OK. OK? lol

I continue to pray the Lord delivers you from pain.

Also there a avatars with motion at GoComics, I right click on those, add to list and they are permanently gone. I hate ads!!

Mildred  Tulsa: In IE you need to right click on the ad (see our discussion below for Aug 13 ) and inspect element, etc. Right clicking on adblock ad or adblock bar doesn't work in IE. The ads are gone in FF. When you right click on the ABP icon on the right side of the task bar in IE, you can click on settings and disable ad blocking on the sites you want to see ads. Who would want to do that? But, there is no way to block ads on specific sites. Since this is happening only on Lucianne they must be doing something in their programming to block adblock plus.

Tulsa  The problemo is IE. Hello? Use FF and you have no ads on any sites.

Yes I know what has to be done to remove ads in IE. And it has to be done every time you clear your browser cache. That is one of a thousand reasons I don't use IE.

I use FF so I don't have ads Evah! Any-Where. Once and done, Mildred. Save yourself!!!

Make yourself a paper brain, aka a sticky note and put it on your pc, laptop or refrig or wherever you will see it.

Mildred posted on Computers &Tech Issues  I went on Lucianne this morning wih Firefox. Under 'A message from Lucianne' and throughout the posted articles, I am getting the 'titles' of the ads, not the ads themselves. Also as I scrolled down, I got a big black band titled 'Trending Articles.' I've reported it as an issue on the page to ABP before but I am still getting the names of the ads. Tulsa: HELP!

Medical Update for Tulsa: I'm actually walking, sort of. When the therapist comes, I put on the boot and use the walker. Tuesday I walked more than 50 feet. Your prayers are definitely helping my recovery. Thanks.

Place your cursor On the bar and Right click. When box comes up click 'adblock bar'. A second screen appears which is prechecked, click 'add to list' and the bars will disappear.

I see Lastest Articles under the must reads, but not trending articles. I click 'latest posts' in the box on the main page to see what is trending with Ldotters. I've already read the headlines at Drudge.

I'll never be a lo-fo, but I have reached TMI (too much information )...most of which is garbage.

Tulsa  Correct...I removed the ads and the bars on the home page. Then I removed the side by side ads in the threads and the bars remained, so I went thru the steps again to remove the bars.

I only had to do it once bc I use the FF browser. The ads have not returned, except when I turn off ABP each day to read the cartoon. See steps above to read cartoon.

I clicked the hamburger icon in FF (three horizontal lines upper right corner )(bun, patty, bun - in case you don't know 'the hamburger'....that is so hilarious ), clicked Options and fine tuned each category. I surf with the sound off. I don't need no steenking beeps and tones.

You go, Girl, on the walking. You are doing so well and I'm so pleased for you. Sitting still is awful. I don't wait well. Never have. So I can honestly imagine being immobile 24/7 and it does sound awful. My mental health would be in danger!

Unless I'm too sick to hold my head up, I would require a pc to surf and play games to keep from going squirrely. Keep up the good work.

I've been mobile within the house--I don't have stairs--so I get around fairly well and am able to get to my computer, TV, refrigerator, etc. The only thing I really miss is going outside. I didn't get a ramp so the step down is too difficult to do, especially by myself. Most days it has been 100+ degrees and inside is soooo much nicer.

In-house mobility is more than enough, imo, while you are healing.

There was an auto update to FF yesterday. The new screen is deep blue. Always browse in private.

I recommend one thing - privacy settings under options.

Click the hamburger
Then click Options.
Then Privacy.

The box that says 'Tracking' should have a check mark.
FF will: ...there's a box w/down arrow - select 'Use Custom Settings'
Check 'Always use private browsing mode'
Check 'Accept cookies from sites
accept third party cookies (box ) select 'Never'

I'm being paged...must scoot. If the above isn't clear, let me know.

I click the FF icon, then 'new private window' then we get a deep blue/purple screen which says 'Private Browsing with Tracking Protection', then I click the bookmarks (favorites ) icon to take me to weather, Drudge, Lucianne, etc.

The old private browsing screen was white.

Mildred posted on Computers &Tech Issues  It's Saturday morning so there must be more ads. This morning I had a series of vertical photos under 'A Message from Lucianne' and then beneath that an ad from Blue Host. In all, 6 errors (ads ). I did the usual right click, then click on inspect element and clicked on the 'x' next to the six. I exited Lucianne and then loaded it again. No ads. I have no idea why ABP does this but it only takes a few seconds and the ads are gone--until next Saturday.
Tulsa: I continue to heal and can now stand with the boot for short periods of time. I even 'walked' (sort of a shuffle with the walker ) about 10 feet twice with the P.T. guy. Boy, did that feel good. Lots of pain but I should be out of the boot in about 3 more weeks and walking wearing a tennis shoe.    Tulsa  I tried to look below to see if I could find your notes. I remember you said you clicked 'debugger'. Try placing your cursor on any ad and right clicking and see if that screen comes on up on the bottom half of the page. See if after clicking debugger, right click again on any ad and see if you get a drop down screen with options.

I just can not remember what the options were but it's pretty much common sense. There are only 4 or so choices, so you can try them all until you hit pay dirt and then do each ad. I'll say a prayer for you.

Also try the ABP icon and see if there are options there in IE....but if I remember correctly there were none. I just don't understand IE 11.

Please consider going to Firefox and save yourself!

I'm in Firefox, but was never rid of the ads in IE ll.

I don't know what to do after that in IE, but hopefully it will come back to you. If it does...make notes, so you'll have them if it happens again.

StormCnter  And good morning right back.
A few months ago, I had strange things going on in my computer and couldn't find the reason. Nothing worked to clear it up. Ken sent a list of programs he had found helpful and had thoroughly checked out:

I already had CCleaner, so chose Malwarebytes from his list, installed it, ran it, allowed it to delete the problems it found, and then my own computer mess was cleared up.

I have Malwarebytes set to run nightly on my computer now. I run CCleaner and Spybot manually when I think about it.

All is running well now. It's good to have L-Dotter friends who know more than we do. [grin]

Mildred  Finally got back on Lucianne this morning--it's only 6:30 am here! I tried all the right clicking before I commented and nothing worked. I tried different settings also. When I filter by Easy List the only thing I get when I right click is the usual Windows list--copy, print, etc. When I had the other problem a few weeks back I cleaned up files I don't usually use and forgot I had deleted Malwarebytes. I'll try that this morning. Maybe that's the file I need. I'll get back to you later, after some breakfast and coffee! I did use CCleaner but that didn't help although I'll also try that this morning and clear the registry. Thanks for caring so much and getting back to me so quickly.

Tulsa  Thank you Storm C for the info.

...and Mildred so glad you're at least back at Lucianne.

I know you are attached to IE, but you could eliminate all this heartache by switching to Firefox. The only time I use IE is when I need to print a document..a bank stmt for instance. IE is not even close to the security offered in Firefox. ...and no I don't own stock in Firefox. I truly hate to see you having these problems repeatedly.

StormC is correct CCleaner will not remove a virus. Run Malwarebytes.

And to find that screen with debugger in the tool bar last night I was in Firefox and right clicked on a faint list of numbers where the ads used to be at Lucianne. I think? you may right click on blank space. Then a box comes up and click on 'Inspect Element (Q )'...then you'll see jibberish code and that tool bar with debugger on the bottom half of the page. Try to take it from there.

I'll check back.

Mildred  Tulsa and StormCnter: Thanks so much. My free trial of Malwarebytes has expired and I'm 'frugal' so decided to try anything else that is free first. (I only have one computer and all the offers usually include multiple computers. ) I then installed Spybot. Ran the search and destroy--all okay. Cleaned the cookies and temp files, etc. It was a busy morning. Finally I decided to check the right click on ads that Tulsa has been telling me about. I can't believe it but I found the Inspect Element near the bottom of the list and clicked on that. How stupid could I have been!!! There was the debugger. After clicking on debugger, I clicked on the red button that had a '5' (that's how many ads I had ) and I'm ad free. Tulsa, I am writing those notes down so I won't forget. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Lucianne friends are the best. Have a great weekend.

P.S. I have Firebox installed and find it is so much faster than IE and use it for quick searches. I've used IE for so many years, it's hard to change at this age.
June 25 at 11:35 EST .

Tulsa  I'm jumping for joy. Good for you.

First Malwarebytes has a free edition. Once the trial addition expires you don't buy the premium, you update the definitions I think and carry on. Just don't click buy or try premium anything else and you'll be fine'll revert to the free addition.

If you plan to install Malwarebytes again, do not, repeat Not, try the premium addition...skip to the free addition. You'll have to look carefully and not bubble or unbubble premium addition and install the trial addition from the beginning. Then you update the definitions before you use it.

I don't like change either, but you will find you don't get bugs in Firefox like you do in IE. You won't lose ABP and get ads. It will not let you make mistakes. It warns you about sites and software so you have to think twice and you avoid problems.

It's hard to help like this. I can't show you screen shots, but we can take this to the computer/tech wall and I'll help all I can with questions about Firefox. That little hamburger icon has all the goodies in it.

And isn't it amazing you just saw the 'right click on ads'. I find if I read instructions several times I get it...sometimes. lol. In person conversations are so much easier especially if I can show you on a pc screen.

This isn't easy, but you have done beautifully.

Be advised I am not a tech in any sense of the word.

Praise the Lord Jesus for helping Mildred.

Mildred posted on Main Page The Lobby  I thought I had finally gotten rid of the ads on Lucianne that keep increasing every day. I have installed AdFender and that worked with Internet Explorer for about a day or two. Then I installed AdBlockPlus with Firefox and that is a disaster. Pages and pages of ads that jump up and down and flash while you are trying to read. I even reported the problem but never got a response. Lucianne is the only site (except Yahoo mail ) that I have the problem. It's really annoying and I stopped visiting Lucianne for a short time but I really like the posts and comments. Anyone have a suggestion?

Tulsa  I installed AdFender on IE and Firefox. Ads still appeared at Lucianne. I went back to ABP on IE and Firefox and the ads are still at Lucianne. The ads don't move or flash anywhere.

I checked each and every internet option. Nothing seems to help.

I've decided to simply ignore them like I did before ABP worked so miraculously. I have no idea why it stopped working and I find nothing on line that helps fix it or explains it.

If/when we need our neighborhood tech to stop by I will certainly ask him and pass along any info.

Under History, drop down, select 'use custom settings...', then check Always Browse in Private. Check Accept cookies and in the drop down by accept third party cookies select 'never'.

I've tried to clean the pc of cookies with Malwarebytes and with Spybot Search and Destroy (ABP ) recommended that. It didn't help.

Mildred  Tulsa. I did email the feedback at AdFender last night and they responded. Of course, after 9 pm there were no ads and they sent a screen shot showing no ads. The ads returned this morning at 6 am (MST ) which is 9 am (EDT ) so I think the ads are most prevalent during high traffic times on Lucianne. I emailed again this morning with the specific ads and will let you know what they tell me.

I uninstalled Firefox and seem to be getting fewer, less annoying ads but that could be because it is still early in the day. That also removed AdBlockPlus which may have been causing problems with AdFender.

I'll be checking back now and then to see if your tech can remove them so I can try it here. Thanks. I'll also let you know if AdFender can do anything.

Tulsa  I won't call the tech unless we have a serious problem. He works for IBM, but is tech support contracted with an ATT call center. He has disks that will remove anything. The prob using him is he comes after work, which is our dinner time. He has not had dinner and I always feel terrible for him.

There is this whole discussion about turning off either java or java script. One of those 'make' the ads work. They also make other things you want work. So turning whichever one is the correct one on and off would be a hassle.

Another thing. The ABP list of ads I sent as 'not blocking ads' was incredible. Some ads were Lucianne. Many were from google. Lucianne is the only place ads show. Add to that they are so obnoxious...crepey skin, clothes pins on eye lids, beets and bosoms. What is all that? Is it a plot by Samaritan? lol...You'll only get that if you follow POI (Person of Interest )

Tulsa  KB3035583 is the download from when this started that reserved your copy of Win. 10, aka GWX (Get Win. 10 )

Find that download and uninstall. They'll send it again. Keep hiding it.

After that MS sent about 5 builds of Win. 10 as downloads.

Find the above downloads and uninstall. None came to our pc bc I never downloaded KB3035583. ..and they have sent that one 3 times minimum.

If Win 10 does gets thru, you have 30 days to uninstall it.

We have Dells. On the bottom right there is a tiny white triangle. That is for icons and notifications. Find GWX and select 'Hide icon and notifications.'

It's all I know to do until July when this ends.

I am disgusted beyond words at MS. MS has passed pushy and become militant!

There is a suggestion down thread and I'll give it a serious look when this pc must be replaced.

Wetenschapper I'd like to encourage those who are unhappy with Windows to give Linux a try. There are dozens of distributions, but the most popular one, one that is extremely user-friendly (it's also more like Windows than is a Mac ), boots in seconds, and runs well even on outdated hardware, is Linux Mint. If you have an extra hard drive or an old computer you're not using, you can download it for free, burn it to a DVD, and install it without having to disturb your Windows system. Applications - and there are hundreds, most of which will read and write popular Windows file formats - are free and available from the "repository" that works like a smartphone app store. I began experimenting with Linux having Windows on one drive and Linux on the other, using them both side by side. Gradually, I came to use Linux almost exclusively, and eventually got out from under Microsoft,s heavy thumb. Mint can be downloaded for free at

Tulsa  Mildred. I turned ABP off on the home page in order to see the cartoon of the day. That is why other ads are coming thru, I believe. If you click ABP you can tell it about offending ads, and send a screen shot. But I believe in order to see the cartoon of the day you must turn ABP off. Or! we can turn ABP on and off after viewing the cartoon of the day....or pass on seeing it. We have options.

There are no ads on any other pages. Best wishes.

I went the ABP and re-downloaded/updated ABP for IE and Firefox and rebooted. I still have ads on home page and recent posts pages.

Lucianne needs the revenue to keep the site open and the ads aren't blinking or waving which is uber distracting, so I'll live with it.

Ad companies and ABP have been fighting for a very long time. It appears the consumer lost. I'll check Cnet and another site with geek cyber friends to see if there is a solution and post if I discover anything. Best wishes.

I followed the on screen instructions to correct. I have the correct filters now but the ads still appear. Lots of them. If you or anyone finds info, pls post. Thank you, sincerely.

Mildred  Tulsa: I can't even change the filter! I left a message at ABP forum pages. If I learn something, I'll be back. Maybe it's time to go back to AdFender?

Mildred  Tulsa: Received the following at ABP forum.

You need a filter like this:
Code: Select all

It would be easier in chrome / firefox.
In IE you have to wait for an easylist author to add the filter or like I said above use firefox to prepare the filters to push in ABP for IE.

Mildred  Here's the workaround for internet explorer. Good luck trying this. I'm not a computer nerd and will use a different ad blocker if Lucianne can't fix this or just say goodbye to Lucianne.

ABP for IE for now let you use only easylist (+regional list )
To add some other list or your custom filters, follow these steps:

- prepare your lists in firefox (abp for firefox ) + your custom filters, then export all filters in a file named patterns.ini.
- replace patterns.ini file from ABP for IE with that one prepared in firefox.

You should:
- close IE
- go to ABP for IE folder
- replace patterns.ini in the folder with that created in firefox
- open IE

the folder with patterns.ini is at:
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\Adblock Plus for IE
(%userprofile% is your user profile directory, like "C:\Users\YourUser" )

Tulsa  You went above and beyond. Thank you. I'm in Firefox and ABP supposedly 'fixed' the prepared list I chose at ABP for me while I was on the Lucianne home page... They said I didn't have the correct things 'checked' Not so. Still have ads.

I deleted and re-downloaded ABP for IE and for Firefox. Then I rebooted. I've sent screen shots to ABP for the ads here.

Firefox is safer for surfing imo, but does not play well with our printer. I use IE if I need to print from the web.

Did not know about Adfender and will check that and for other ad blockers that might help Thank you for all this info and the tip on Adfender too.

Mildred  Tulsa: Got a snarky reply from ABP when I told them I would find another blocker. I had difficulty uninstalling ABP and had to go to CCleaner Registry and found 3 ABP files and deleted them. Finally I was able to uninstall ABP. I've installed AdFender and the HomePage doesn't have ads at this time. I hope the ads are gone now. Thanks for you input. It's nice to know that I haven't lost my mind completely when the computer acts up!

Tulsa  Haven't bothered to write ABP and would have been unhappy with a snarky reply (understatement ).

We had CCleaner and our tech said it is actually malware. At least two or three posters here disagree with that. Nevertheless we removed it. History, cookies, internet files, etc. are deleted upon exiting the web and the pcs are set to defrag weekly, so I do not miss the too often updates of CCleaner.

I've watched our tech go into RegEdit often enough to do it myself, tho I have been told it's dangerous.

I truly appreciate your help today and I was happy to offer whatever I could to you and anyone reading.

Lucianne with ads looks like it's badly decorated for Christmas. I do not think I can take it. ABP is not working, so I shall try AdFender. Thank you again for the referral.

I'm sick of politics. I still read headlines, but badly need a break of happiness and light for an extended period. Will check in here after a fashion.

Mildred posted on Main Page The Lobby  I give up. First, Lucianne gets so slow it's takes too long to load. Then because some commenters hit the slow-to-register Like button too many times, no one can use the like button. This time it's the excuse that people are getting too vehement about their opinions. I use AdBlockPlus and I know it slows some sites but now Lucianne has found a way to allow ads. I don't want to look at crepey knees and I can't get rid of it. I reinstaalled AdBlockPlus but this site is still allowing this type of ad. I'm outta here until someone at Lucianne is able to bring back the old Lucianne. Sorry for the rant. I'll miss so many of those whose comments gave all of us information and opinions whether I agreed with them or not.

FlatCityGirl  I thought I was the only one with the creepy skin ad.

What's up with that?

StormCnter  Mildred, it appears the Like button was the cause of the slowdown of the site. Just think of the number of people hitting that button even once, plus some people rapid-flicking it hundreds of times. Each of those Likes took time to register, thus slowing down the entire forum. If it's an either or, I'll take the sacrifice of the Like button so the site can be faster.

I do agree the ads for a cure for crepey knees and flabby arms are appetite-suppressors.

Phooey  Mildred, I right clicked on the crepey knees picture... a menu pops up that allows you to customize AdBlockPlus to add extra filters. The offending picture is now gone however, the daily cartoon is also missing. Will try to refine the fix.

Mildred  Phooey: Thanks. I tried your suggestion but I can't get to anything that will allow me to customize AdBlockPlus. I use I.E. 11 and Win 7 professional. I don't have the AdBlockPlus icon on the toolbar either. Seems to be a problem with them. I think I'll try to get the ad removed via AdBlockPlus website and see what happens.

Mildred  Thanks everyone. I checked with AdBlockPlus and apparently this is a problem with internet explorer. They suggested I use Google Chrome or Firefox. I'm not a fan of either so I will find my news elsewhere. I'll check back from time to time and if Lucianne can get the site working again, I'll be back.

StormCnter  Mildred, I have three browsers, Chrome, Firefox and IE. I use them for different things, but I prefer Firefox for And, as you said, some of the browsers give me problems for different reasons. But, I'm tired of looking at those wrinkley, saggy knees and arms on the mother ship.

Mildred  The ad is gone! I was chatting with AdBlockPlus Forum and I thought they might have removed the ads. I got another reply early this mmorning and they say it just disappeared. Perhaps it was Lucianne or maybe just one of those unexplainable computer things? Anyway I can enjoy Lucianne again. Thanks for everyone's input--I was able to chat with AdBlockPlus and explain exactly what we were seeing. You are the greatest.

Wetenschapper  These ads were popping up in the Opera browser (which I believe uses the Chrome engine ) as well, but disappeared after a couple of days. I used to make an exception for my ad-blocker because these ads do, after all, help support the site. Trouble is, there were so _many_of them; not without some remorse and guilt I eventually turned AdBlocker on for this site as well. I try to compensate by donations from time to time.

Tulsa  Phooey! Thank you so much for the info on crepey ads. I means...My eyes!

We use Firefox and IE. Firefox and our printer don't play will together. So if I plan to print on line I enter the web using IE. If I'm reading I enter the web with Firefox.

I down loaded ABP for Firefox and for IE. I do feel Firefox has more protections surfing than IE. And we use MSSE (MicroSoft Security Essentials ) for virus protection. It's free. MS does not advertise and it's the best of all we've tried. It's not a resource hog. It's not sensitive and if a site it bad, MS closes it.

For FireF the red ABP is on the top tool bar. For IE the red ABP icon is on the lower tool bar.

The secret was to Right click on the ad and select from the choices given. The cartoon on the home page remained.

I'm so tickled. Thank you again.
