   GO3  June 26 in military history:

1775 - Washington visits NY en route to assume command of the army at Boston.
1857 - Queen Victoria awards the first Victoria Crosses in Hyde Park, decorating 62 veterans of the Crimea
1917 - First American combat troops arrive in France. In June only 14,000 American troops managed to reach France. American Expeditionary Force Commanding General, John J. "Blackjack" Pershing, remained adamant that US troops would not be sent to Europe until they were fully trained. It took until May 1918 for troop strength to reach one million.
