StormCnter Yes, this gentleman really did work on stage and in film before hitting the big time with a popular long-running television role. He began in vaudeville. During that period, he introduced and helped popularize the songs "My Mammy", "My Melancholy Baby", and "Carolina in the Morning". He progressed to silent films and then minor roles in over 100 movies before he landed a supporting role in a record-setting, long-run television series. Can you guess his name?

Richdet Looks like Fred Mertz to me. Aka William Frawley.
If memory serves, he died suddenly of a coronary on an LA sidewalk after emerging from a movie matinee. (A detail that may be of interest to readers of a movie wall. Or, at any rate, a good way to make one's exit after a long career that included many movies. )

StormCnter Bill Frawley thanks you, Rich. He had a longer and more varied career than I had realized.
