ALynnMcW posted on Politics Can someone catch me up and tell me when serving (there's and old fashioned word ) in elected government became a vanity job? When it became about 4 or 8 years of creating a legacy and not about protecting and defending the country and the constitution? Is this the result of media or just a general decline in civilization? It has become a popularity contest with endless rounds of self promotion and little or no thought to the hard working citizens of this country. I am appalled. I really can't think of a word strong enough to describe how I feel about this administration specifically and government (including most Republicans ) in general. Repulsed comes to mind but really it's worse than that. Just to wrap up I am not hopeless about the situation just heartsick about it. Long live the Republic!

Gerty I think the 24/7 news (over )coverage has something to do with this situation. BTW, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Linder ALMcW...I have to speak up for my senator. I often wonder what you all think when you see Sen. Grassley on TV. Polished and glib he is not. For real...he is. As a Republican I don't always agree with him but he will have a logical reason for his position and being in disfavor won't budge him. I have to respect that. I've been county chairman of his campaign every year he has run and it is the easiest job possible. Nobody turns me down. For now he is insisting that Congress live under the same Obamacare laws as we in the cheap seats. Thanks, Sen. Grassley.

ALynnMcW posted on Suggested Reading "The Third Bullet" by Stephen Hunter makes me believe the Warren Commission didn't have a clue. A fictionalized account of the JFK assassination with a second shooter. Absolutely fascinating. I always believed Oswald acted alone. Not anymore.

ALynnMcW posted on Politics I'll admit to a bit of confusion. Even listening to fellow L dotters there is no consensus. Do we resist, say no to tax increases or let them have their way and watch them fail so we can pick up the pieces? There are advantages and principles in both ways.
Some say amnesty. Rush says it's not about amnesty but giveaways. Reagan supported amnesty (for a lot less people ). Rick Perry was crucified for in state tuition for illegals. I wonder if we got those votes in Texas. Illegal aliens are at least a legal issue.
Is government about social issues or does that fall to the higher authority. I don't support gay marriage or abortion but those that do will answer to their Maker whether they believe in him or not. Is that a hill worth dying for?
If we can make this country stronger fiscally (Taxed enough already ) I believe a rising tide lifts all boats. Will that be enough Santa Claus for everyone, no not all, but some.
Confusion reigns. Thanks for letting me rant.

Balogreene Somewhere in here I've decided it's all about the Constitution. If it's not in the Constitution, we have no business making laws about it. The Federal Govt is here to protect national security, and settle inter-state disputes. Anything else is a state issue. Immigration is a national security issue, so it is within the purview of the Feds. I agree with you on abortion and gay-marriage. It's not for us to decide. I love people who are gay and committed, and I would never want to take that away from them. Even though I see it as being wrong. These are state issues. I guess, we all have to go back and get more familiar with the Constitution, and hold our Senators and Representatives to it.

RoseOfTexas I don't think the gays would be satisfied with "gay marriages" unless all churches were forced to perform them. Religious freedom is one of the main goals of the founding of our country - too valuable to give up IMO. Of course, if the definition of marriage can be changed, so can the definition of wedding - think churches would get away with saying we don't perform weddings any more, only opposite-sex commitment-blessing ceremonies?

ALynnMcW posted on Politics Check out http://www.icivics.org/ I learned about this in a Baylor Alumni magazine featuring an interview with Ken Starr (BU Pres ) and Sandra Day O'Connor who started this program to educate children about civics. Interesting. I haven't delved into the content, so don't know if it is liberal leaning in constitution interpretation but teaching about government function has long been absent from schools. If it just teaches the mechanics of how our republic was constructed to operate it could be a good thing. Sorry about the link I don't know how to insert a working link.

ALynnMcW posted on Gardening & Landscaping Have any of you ever tried or accomplished keeping a poinsettia alive from one year to the next. I printed off instructions but it is very work-y with water schedules, light schedules and what not. It actually suggests that because they are so cheap to just buy new ones every year. I just might like the challenge. Anyone ever do this?

Escaped commieny I've planted them in the yard and they did fine, but then found out they are poisonous to pets and ripped them out. Bought a pretty 'velvet' fake for Holiday decorations.

StarFire Poinsettias are native to Mexico and Central America. When we lived in Houston, I thought about planting our left over Christmas poinsettia. A family near Rice University had one about six foot tall beside their porch and it was gorgeous. However, to get it to turn red at the right time the owners had to keep it completely covered every night for about two months in the fall to force the bracts to turn red. If even a little ambient light reaches the plant, it will fail to bloom. I decided it wasn’t worth the effort for me. BTW - They are not really highly toxic. You would have to eat about 1,000 of the bracts per 100 pounds of body weight to reach a toxic level.

Gerty We have had a 'rescued' poinsettia for five years (Sister rescued it from a neighbor who discarded it after Christmas ). It sits on the window sill of a South facing window all year long. We have never covered it or taken it away from its spot on the sill. It has 'bloomed' every year. Go figure.

BirdsNest I would never subject an indoor houseplant to my care. I have a brown thumb when it comes to houseplants. Right now I am overwintering several banana trees and mexican petunias, just waiting til time to put them back outside where it is safe. A friend gave us a Poinsettia for Christmas, I thanked him and in two days found a new home for it!
