Today around 5pm Wallops will hopefully launch a rocket....read the article above. Supposedly it will be visible to the entire East Coast...I do hope it goes off without a hitch, the area could use the revenue from future launches.

BirdsNest posted on Politics I read elsewhere that Caroline Kennedy will probably be the new ambassador to Japan. Anyone know where we send apologies to Japan regarding this??
BirdsNest posted on Dogs, Cats & Critters We had a GREAT day yesterday. Local feed store had a Swap Meet scheduled for the morning. We participated in the last one in Sept. Managed to sell some extra roosters and chatted with many nice folks. We saw many of the same people plus hundreds more! Spent the morning talking chickens and ducks. Sold everything we took to sell and almost sold Jacob!! I caught the birds in the dark with a flashlight and did not realize that I had caught him. I quickly separated him from the roosters and put him in a cage in the van. Whew!!! He is a Silkie, his feathers are very colourful. Hagar wants to keep the solid black Silkies only, but Jacob has won our hearts so he gets to stay. Even sold 4 jars of jams/preserves. I was surprised. Folks had money to spend. I needed to pay my feed bill, so it all worked out!! Note: we sold 4 big ducks to one lady that went with another lady who butchers and packs the meat for customers. She stopped by and asked me what kind of duck would be considered a meat duck, and I told her these would. They would have already been butchered by us if we had not had a miscommunication with the butcher. Then she brought the other lady over, the woman said they were a good buy, she said to hold them she would get the money. So Tuesday we will take 4 of our other ducks to the butcher and Wednesday we will pick up the packaged meat.

BirdsNest Oh, another couple stopped by just before we left to ask if we had any call ducks or Silkies to sell. They have gotten the coop ready but only want to buy birds from us because they like the way we treat our animals. That made us feel good. Oh met a couple that moved here from St. Louis to be near their grandkids....it took all of my willpower NOT to ask if they knew Rake King!!!!!!!!!!!We enjoyed their conversation. Their house is near where we go to the post office so we have watched things change with their place(new garage, kiddie pool planters for veggies, changing decorations on their fence ). They have a lovely home. It was a GREAT day.

BirdsNest posted on Main Page The Lobby I have not posted since the news of Cap. What can I say that would be better or more eloquent that what has already been said?? I do hope his family will be filled with the love that LDotters are expressing for their Kevin. He will be missed from here. His posts are legendary. He gave much more to those he was in contact with. RIP Cap, we will miss you more than any of us can express. But you will not be forgotten. IHLG

BirdsNest posted on Main Page The Lobby Update on the arson fires locally-Shore Bank has donated $1,000 to a fund dedicated for distribution to the local fire companies fighting these fires.Excerpt from the local news- W.Thomas Mears said, "The past five months have severely strained local resources and our fire companies need our support now more than ever. We hope that by reaching out to our community for help, we can support our local volunteers." Monetary donations can be made at any Shore Bank branch or mailed to: Shore Bank, c/o Accomack Firefighters Assistance Fund, PO Box 920, Onley, Virginia 23418. Please make checks payable to: Accomack Firefighters Assistance Fund. WBOC TV had planned a public meeting in one of the local fire halls, they invited State Police, local LEO's, firemen, anyone involved in the investigation. They had hoped to be able to better inform the public about this situation, but all those invited declined to participate so the meeting has been called off. The TV station still has interviews recorded that they will air anyway.
Sounds like the investigation has details they are not willing to share right now. I guess that means they do not want to spook the arsonist at this time. The rest of us are starting to feel like mushrooms.

BirdsNest posted on Main Page The Lobby Okay, this is the best I can do. There is no website or any means to donate online.I have an address that you can mail a check or money order to: Painter Volunteer Fire Company PO Box 275 Painter, VA 23420
They will use the funds for the re-stocking of their pantry(coffee, cups, water,Gatorade, etc ) Any excess will go to the other fire companies that are fighting these arson fires.
If you really do not want to mail a check, I can accept money into a PayPal acct and buy the items and take them to the fire dept and they can mail you a receipt for the donation. Either way. Fires are up to 72 now since Nov 12.
Thank you to any of you lovely people that are generous enough to make a donation. This is a poor county and the fireman are forced to do out of pocket purchases.

BirdsNest posted on Recipes Chilly here today so I made a pot of Potato Broccoli Cheese soup. It is delicious. I used Deep South Dish's potato soup recipe(I used whole milk instead of evap. milk ) and added broccoli during the last 10 minutes(or til broccoli is done ) and once everything was cooked, I added 2 c. shredded cheese tossed with 1 T. flour and mixed it in. Cut off the heat and let it sit. Yum.

Gerty That's my kind of soup too, Miss Birdy! Only, I cheat... I buy a dry mix potato soup (calls for a whole milk base ) and add the broccoli and 2% Kraft's Extra Sharp cheddar cheese (large grate-shredded ) during the simmer.
You are absolutely right...Yuuuuummmmmm!

BirdsNest Saw a recipe for asparagus chowder that sounded good. Could just use same recipe and add asparagus and cheese. Will have to wait til it is less than $4/lb though, and some that DOESN'T come from Mexico. I don't like salmonella with my asparagus, I am funny that way.
BirdsNest posted on Main Page The Lobby Sleepy Eastern Shore of VA was just featured on CBS This Morning show about the arson fires. So far 71 since Nov.12
I do not normally watch any daytime TV but a friend called to tell us the segment was coming up so I switched on the television. I guess now the police have ramped up the investigation. A couple of days ago they had a night time prayer vigil and one is due this weekend. They are doing whatever they can to try to catch this creep, but our county is huge and very rural.

Rake King I have always felt "matches" were more dangerous than bullets, in that it only take one match to kill hundreds, which one bullet can't do.

BirdsNest Now, 72...there was a brush fire last night.
The county has banned all outdoor burning unless the contents are in a burn barrel. A couple of nights ago someone was burning a trash pile and did not notify the fire company and they sent out 4 fire companies. A lot of wasted resources there. The companies are requesting donations of bottled water, coffee, sugar, creamer,Gatorade etc to replenish dwindling cupboards at the fire houses.

Escaped commieny Do they have a website or snail mail address for donations? I went through the wild fires here in Central Fl in 1997, the soffits melted off the houses and dripped down like icing on a cake, the trees burned and pine trees blew up with the sap, the wild life running for their lives and highways closed for lack of visability. Worse than anything Hitchock ever came up with. These AH's need to be found and strung up, just terrible to hear this.

Surfhut I lived through many wildfires and evacuations when in SoCal. Some of the big fires were set by stupid campers or high winds knocking down power lines. The arson-caused fires that I recall were set by firefighters.

BirdsNest I have seen one for dishwashers but I will have to search for it.
Washing soda can be found in WalMart, I believe it is Arm & Hammer.

Flaming Sword I forgot the most wonderful thing I found in the professional line. How I EVER lived without this is beyond me. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Just a little spray, or a bit into the dishpan, sprayed on greasy pot and pans, stovetops, range hoods. Sparkling clean, instantly. I bet it would be great on greasy car oil stained clothes.
