Gram77 posted on Suggested Reading  Sometimes I read a rather off beat book. The latest one that has peeked my interest if West by Carys Davies. I'm tossing this out to see what Storm thinks.

StormCnter  Gram, this one is going on my list. I had not heard of it until your mention. I looked it up on Goodreads and there seem to be nothing but raves. But, did you like it?

We can handle 10 degrees of your heat, but no need for humidity.

Gram77  I'm afraid living in Florida means heat and humidity go hand in hand. The sharing handful changes now and then. I have decided to see that as encouraging.

Some of us live here by choice and are mostly happy with the weather.
Hurricanes are a different story, though. Don't get me started.

Kono  Surely not all 9 levels, Phooey. The level where it snows must be reserved for midwesterners and yankees who haven't moved to Florida, yet.

Gram77 posted on Main Page The Lobby  I told the folk lore story this afternoon around 5PM. For some reason it is gone. Given the explanation below, I am not sure I want to post it again.

MeiDei  Gram, I would very much appreciate the recount of Indian lore. I hope you have the time to retype it. I just remember two sayings attributed to our southeast coast Indians.
1 ) Never judge a man until you have walked two full moons in his moccasins.
2 ) Never pitch your tent within 3 miles of the ocean. English translation of course. But you refer to something more lengthy -
as a legend & I'm, again, most interested.

Gram77 posted on Main Page The Lobby  Gram here and in great shape weather wise. The age old Indian folk lore story continues to keep us safe. It looks like the Panhandle needs to be prayed for right now.

   Phooey  Perhaps this MeiDei:

The LoneRanger & Tonto are riding down into a box canyon. At the far end, the LoneRanger notices an army of Comanche Indians, in full war-paint, frowning down from the cliff walls at him.
Turning to his left he notices a great number of very mad looking Arapaho Indians staring down.
On his right he observes a host of Cherokee Indians peering at him over the rim of the canyon.
Looking behind, he sees every Apache brave in the world slowly creeping into the canyon, blocking the exit.
The LoneRanger turns to Tonto and says, "We're in a heap of trouble, Tonto!"
Tonto's nervous reply, "Uhh...who do you mean we, pale-face?"

MeiDei  Ah Phooey, I don't think that is what Gram alluded to, however, I like your story, yes sir, I do - and the smile that crept across my face - (so it was read a 2nd time )!

Gram77 posted on Suggested Reading  Just finished The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. It's a wonder any of those children survived their young lives and became productive adults. Several years ago I read Half Broke Horses, which was a very good book and wasn't aware of Walls background. I just thought I had stumbled onto a good book.

StormCnter  Those were both good. My daughter-in-law considers The Glass Castle to be one of the best she has ever read. That type of memoir, however, makes me doubly thankful to have grown up in a normal home with a happy childhood.

Gram77 posted on Suggested Reading  Just finished Every Note Played. You have heard of the 2 hankie movie. This book is a 2 hankie story. It takes a lot for me to be affected that much. The author is Lisa Genova and her latest book tells the story of a family dealing with ALS. Genova's book deals with this disease with both kindness and frankness.

StormCnter  Gram, there is a review of this book in today's Wall Street Journal Review section. The reviewer reminds readers of Genova's science education and training (making the point that she does a better job with "victim" stories than Jodi Picoult ) and liked the book a lot.
I probably won't read it, though. My much-loved younger brother is dealing with the ravages of Parkinson's and it's difficult for him and for our family. ALS is a different disease, but terrifying and horrible, too.

Gram77 posted on Movies & Reviews  TCM showed a movie I haven't seen in years. The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness. Something interesting was added at the end. The person hosting the show for today said that the missionary the movie was about was furious at how much there was wrong in her story and threatened a lawsuit. I need to look up all this. Sounds interesting.

Gram77  Thanks, Mei. It seems that Hollywood, as it often does, dressed up some of the real story. The article you posted was most helpful.
