Linder posted on Nostalgia The school year for our grandchildren is winding down. Brings back memories of those days when the sweet freedom of summer was so near. Andrea ...(3rd grade ) is spending the night with us so that she can ride her bike to and from school tomorrow....like the town kids do. She lives ten miles away and rides the bus. Her parents know where she is every instant....how times have changed.

Eagles Dominion I was fortunate enough as a kid growing up that my family had a cabin on the lake. Every summer when we finished school we loaded up the car and moved to the lake for the entire summer. Dad would drive the extra 60 miles round trip everyday just so we'd enjoy (I know he enjoyed it as much as we did )the summer out of town! LOL

Surfhut Moore is a suburb of OKC; part of the metro area. The monster struck 3 miles south of my office. We have an underground storm shelter big enough for all of us. I'm pretty sure Magdalene and Saguni are safe. Don't know about Montanabound. She lives in the country near Shawnee, just east of OKC. There's unspeakable death and destruction. Prayers please, dear Warriors.

Magdalene Surfie, Shawnee was hit yesterday. I don't have contact info for Montana. For those who remember back before there was a Connection, on May 3, 1999, a massive tornado followed almost the same path, turning sharply north after it hit Moore. Some of the local weathermen say this one was worse in many ways, one of them said the worst tornado in history. That one was late in the day, after 6, this one was around 3:30. It was on the ground for a good 45 minutes (I watched the whole thing ). The path was 11 miles long and up to 2-1/2 miles wide with its debris field. Whole neighborhoods, hundreds, maybe thousands of homes leveled, not trailer parks, these are primarily brick & mortar. Shopping areas flattened. And the worst of it, two elementary schools were demolished, and one of them was not fully evacuated. They are digging it out, but estimate as many as 40-50 children and staff may be still under the rubble. Most public buildings do not have basements here. (If you'd ever tried to dig a hole, you'd understand why. )

Balogreene Oh goodness, why do tornadoes hit schools. In 1965, or 66, when I was in 9th grade, there were tornado warnings. They made us leave the building, then locked the doors. We watched green skies, and funnels go overhead. When we got home, we found the tornado had hit Belvedere IL, one place hit was the high school. The buses with the elementary and junior high students were outside the school. Many were hurt and killed. In 1970 I met girls who had been there. Their patterned pantyhose were still imprinted on their legs. But, they were the lucky ones, they lived. I am back to those years, those fears.

Montanabound The Moore storm, much weakened, continued through our little town on a northwest path. We got in the shelter and waited it out. I heard it touched down two miles north, but it must have hit a cow pasture, as I haven't heard of anyone's house being struck. I remember the May 3, 1999 tornado really well. My younger son was getting inducted into the Honor Society, so we were all in the school auditorium. One of the administrators was listening to a weather radio and told us all to grab a piece of cake and get to a shelter. That storm also leveled Moore, then made its way to our town. We had some fence damage then, but nothing this time. I'm really thankful, but it is heartbreaking to watch the local news, especially children and parents not able to find each other.

Linder posted on Gardening & Landscaping Gramps brought his new Dixon zero-radius mower home today. He is retiring this year at 76 and mowing will be his job. He also announced he had bought another rifle today. I told him we were going to talk about him turning over his check book. Not really, he's worked hard all these years and hope he has many more to enjoy.

We never know what tomorrow will bring but for today, life is good.

Linder posted on Pet Peeves This time I have a real pet peeve. The use of the word gentleman when it isn't deserved. It happens all the time on the news when a lawbreaker/criminal is referred to as a "gentleman". It happened three times in succession today ... referring to the two terror suspects as gentlemen. Made me talk to the TV.

Balogreene Why do women have face lifts? Coco Chanel famously said she had earned every wrinkle and every gray hair, and refused to cover them up. I was born the year I was born, nothing can change that, my face reflects my life's challenges, and easy times both. Why would I want to lie?

Surfhut Linder, I guess men have facelifts for the same reasons women do. Vanity, Insecurity, Self-Delusion. Balo, you said "my face reflects my life's challenges, and easy times both." That was inspired/inspiring. My hair is gray. Most of my wrinkles are either wisdom lines or laugh lines. Women in my family have actually told me that, at my age, I am a fool to not color my hair or wear a lot of makeup. I just smile and nod and refrain from telling them that it is really ridiculous to try looking like a twenty-something when the world clearly sees you are fifty-something.

Gerty Now wait just a minute! To all the gentleladies posting above: Cosmetic surgery (major or minor ) is, like exposing the age of a woman, a delicate topic. Why does anyone 'go under the knife'? There are all sorts of reasons---and I believe we should not make judgments on personal choices. Would you call it vanity if your neighbor has a manicure or (Heaven forbid ) a pedicure? No---most here would agree that it depends on a person's choice of how much she likes to care for her body and how much she is able (willing ) to spend! With the ease and popularity of plastic surgery today, it is a matter of choice for a woman to go from manicure to pedicure; face cream to face lift! ;- )

Linder Gerty, You are right...shouldn't make judgments...and it's a double standard but I have different expectations about vanity from men and women...will never understand why a mature man wants to erase his life from his face.

Gerty How kind of you to make such a comment, Linder. Perhaps my attitude towards this topic is the result of having been around for so long. But I learn something new every day. For instance, my soon-to-be-ex-brother-in-law (try saying that fast with marbles in your mouth! ) recently had liposuction around his copious gut. Now, I ask you.....what on earth is going on?!? It has a basis, I think, in how one wishes others to see themselves. Is it a form of lying? Perhaps. But I still comb my hair and wash my face upon arising even from a nap----I don't have to look like I've been sleeping; I can do something to improve my appearance and give myself a bit of pride in how I look. However, like every thing else---we can go too far. Joan Rivers--Yikes!!!

Balogreene Oh yeah! I sounded so good. I'm pretty close to going to a plastic surgeon for an "eye lift". My eyelids are sagging, and blocking my sight, so I find that more of a necessity than vanity. I also have skin tags I want off, that is vanity. The gray hair and wrinkles can stay. One of my sister says she'd never get rid of her gray. When she was a young teacher parents used to question her knowledge and maturity. Once she started going gray, they quit.

Balogreene Here in NOVA a place has opened up, "Windy City Red Hots". Oh my goodness, Chicago street vendor hot dogs, nothing better. Vienna beef hot dog, ploschman's mustard, neon green pickle relish, a tomato wedge, a pickle, a hot pepper, on a bun, with celery salt. All of a sudden I'm back at Navy Pier, circa 1975.
