Surfhut  Happy Birthday to our Lovely Hostess! Words cannot express how grateful I am to you for these two wonderful sites and all the other things you do. To a great extent, I owe you my sanity. So many of us have met each other via your sites and are life-long friends. Love from Surfie.

   Mike PHX  Happy Birthday, "Mom".
As my birth mom has, you have taken me to the woodshed on more than a few, and always warranted, occasions. And also as with my birth mom, nothing made me feel lower than a scolding from either of you. And, finally, as with my birth mom, you've shown a remarkable forgiveness and given me a few second chances...of course, after giving me enough time to see the error in my idiocy.
Enjoy, Classy Lady. You're an inspiration to us all.

Balogreene  Here goes my soap box. I live with my mom and my sister. Two years ago my sister went on disability. Mom is on SS and dad's retirement. We can't file jointly. For years my sister declared the house as a deduction, she can't any more. I can't either. It's a deduction we lose. We all file 1040-EZ. If gays get the marriage benefits, why don't we? Why aren't we a family?

Pineledger posted on Main Page The Lobby  I'm reading The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy, by David Nassaw, and while I suspect most people here haven't much use for the Kennedys, I'm finding it very instructive. Last night read about the 30s, watching JPK maneuver to get himself put in charge of the SEC; how he made money (market manipulation and insider trading, prior to the creation of the SEC, and booze at the repeal of Prohibition ); how his darling (Joe Jr. ) took a year to study in London and do a grand tour of Europe, getting enamoured of both the Nazis and the Russian Communists; and how JPK dealt with Jewish Americans while Hitler was dealing with the Jewish Germans.

I really do recommend this book highly. It is very evenhanded and does not paint an angelic rosy picture of the Kennedys. It is a HUGE book though. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and have been reading it (at night ) for two weeks.

Gerty  These are parts of fern plants--are they not? I also believe they are eatable. Got a recipe?

Pineledger  Yes, they are fern fiddleheads. These had just been washed and the ends of the stems trimmed...I just saute them gently in butter, not too long. No salt or pepper or anything else. To me they taste like really good local asparagus. We usually have them with fresh fish or shellfish. Recently we had them in a mixed greens salad with a simple oil and vinegar dressing -- good that way too!

Pineledger posted on Suggested Reading  I would urge everyone to read Charles Murray's 'Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960 - 2010'. You will find yourself constantly noticing examples of what Murray talks about (and concludes ). He nails what has happened to our country exactly.

RoseOfTexas  The money quotes, to me, in the last chapter (pages 289-90 ): "The new upper class still does a good job of practicing some of the virtues, but it no longer preaches them. It has lost self-confidence in the rightness of its own customs and values, and preaches nonjudgementalism instead."

"...it is not acceptable n the new upper class to use derogatory labels for anyone, with three exceptions: people with differing political views, fundamentalist Christians, and rural working-class whites."

Pineledger posted on Main Page The Lobby  This morning an email arrived purportedly from ACH, an electronic fund clearing house. Not bad as phishing attempts go. DO NOT click on the link to a report about a supposed draft/transfer that did not go through from your bank account. Wells Fargo has confirmed that this is a fraud.

Rake King  If to get a large amount of money, you must first send money...it's a scam run worldwide, usually by Nigerians, but copied by many others. Best advice send a copy of the email to your I.P. or email provider (most have fraud departments ).
