Rake King posted on Gardening & Landscaping  Those of you with Zoysia grass lawns, be alerted a disease is killing off patches of lawns. If you see this contact whomever you use for lawn treatments. If not the disease, it can also be the results of grubs attacking root structure. Normally a trouble free lawn grass, I don't recommend re-sodding, as that is being found the following year to have also died.

MeiDei  Having had various lawn problems including grubs & friends, dog spots & snow melt areas I've used to great success - Jerry Baker's Lawn Tonic. The following is from a site in praise of it.
"The Jerry Baker Lawn Tonic..
About twice a year I spray our lawn with a lawn tonic that was originated by Jerry Baker. It is a combination of liquid ingredients that accomplishes several great things for your yard. I am often asked for the recipe so I thought I would post it an everyone could have a beautiful lawn.

The ingredients are generally found at the local dollar store:
•One bottle of liquid dishwashing liquid (not anti-bacterial )
•One can of beer - not light
•One can of regular cola (not diet )
•1 cup of household ammonia
•1 bottle of antiseptic mouthwash like Listerene (or store brand )
•10 or so drops of hot sauce like Tobasco

Mix the ingredients in a bucket and apply to your lawn in some type of hose-end sprayer. The above amount should cover around 5000 square feet. Hose end sprayers vary, so you may have to move fairly quickly as not to run out.
Here is my understanding as to what these ingredients do:

•The dishwashing liquid breaks up the oily film on the surface of your lawn's soil. This allows water to reach the deeper grass roots for a healthier lawn. It will also allow the other things you do (like fertilize ) to go deeper in the soil. Dishwashing soap is also distasteful to insects and critters.

•The yeast in the beer feeds on the sugar in the soda and helps to break down thatch.

•The ammonia is liquid nitrogen for a greening boost. (but don't overdo it )

•The mouthwash helps fight lawn diseases.

•The hot sauce is an insect and critter repellent.

I apply in the spring and fall and have had great results."

MeiDei  Oh, the above is for large lawns - just checked my repurposed large glass pickle jar that I mix this up in for my "recipe" - same as above but just 1-1/2 cup dish detergent (or cheapo powder laundry ) and 1 or 1-1/2 cup listerine. My recipe from Jerry dates back to the early 80's & doesn't include Tobasco.

Rake King  Seriously, I have seen a mixture much like you outline from an old Chech who lived next door to us in my youth, and who cut his lawn with a hand-push reel type mower.

Rake King posted on Movies & Reviews  Please understand I am not leaving, I am simply not doing quizzes to see that those who want a more traditional Movie Wall cam make their posts and banter. If I see it returning to low activity, I promise I will return to doing the quizzes, only on a more reduced schedule. How's
That?

Gerty  Good morning, Mr.RakeKing! I have always wanted to ask you a question. This seems as good a time as any.

How did you become interested in MovieLand? It seems so far from your family's business. The depth to which you research (and probably already know ) seems almost endless!

May we take advantage of this brief pause in the quizzes to learn a bit more about the King of Movies & Reviews?

I make no apologies for my unabashed intrusion on your privacy! :- )

Rake King  Gerty as a young person, movies we a dime (two features ), so during the school year I went every Friday evening, and Sunday matinee. During summer vacation I went two nights and Sunday. Only interruption to that schedule came when we got out first TV, my Dad bought in 1949. What I am saying is I have a great love of the movies, and to this day I buy, rent, subscribe so I can continue the fantasy they provide. Like all of those poster/players who have played my quizzes "I Know" they also love movies, the players, writers and directors. What I found was that as I got older, I would watch old b/w movies from my younger days and they showered me with memories, so maybe it would do the same for others...thus was born my quizzes, and others have told us of their memories
too. I realize some of those memories are sad, but I try to stress to good ones. Technically, I have 27 sites I draw quiz info from....I could never remember all this myself, although some I do.

Some mistake my efforts to be a TCM of true facts that constantly need correction of errors. Those people miss the real meaning of my efforts. I am not perfect, I'm old and sometimes get things mixed up, and we are NOT playing for money, but for fun. The memories are what I'm about and there is no right or wrong answer..MEMORIES like my first date with Charlotte Walk at the Princess Theatre on Pestalozzi St. In south St Louis in 1949 at age 14. The movie was "Red River", with John Wayne and Monty Clift. I put my arm around her and then got up enough courage and kissed her. Charlotte passed away in 2007. We remained friends for more than 50 years, she married a fireman and had 3 children.

I hope this explanation tells you a lot about me and friends who hold a very special place in my heart, and that includes you all on The Connection. I am bending over backwards here to be fair to other posters, and I wouldn't think to do otherwise.

Rake King posted on Movies & Reviews  I notified Luis, Lucianne and the Board I was standing down from doing more quizzes, as one complaint is one too many. I thought I was doing something "everyone" enjoyed. Since I don't visit all the walls, I was not aware of the growing dislike, and some thinking I had hijacked the Movie Wall. To those I am giving you back the Movie Wall, but as I see now only one person chose to do a Red Box announcement, kinda like the way I found it two years ago. To all those who enjoyed playing I have loved testing your memories and kinda give those memories a kick every now and then. We had some real fun and laughs along the way. My best to everyone, including those who did not like what I was doing. I harbor no ill will to anyone. I may do some posts every now and then, so you have not heard the last from me....yet.

Gram77  Rake, what growing dislike? This entire mess happened due to one and only one person. Forgive my anger and my disappointment but it is real and I needed to share. You will be truly missed and you will never know the respect I have for you. Stay well and take care.

HopeandGlory  Sigh! . . . the latest installment of the "Movie Wall Wars." Are we going to let the "Agitators" win again . . . you notice she's not been back to post a "Movie Review." In England they call this type of person a "Wind-up Merchant." It sure fits in this instance. Please reconsider RK, you'll be sorely missed.

Rake King  Susannah's was not the only comment. I was not noticing comments on other walls, until now. Here's one from June 22nd "This belongs on the Movies wall, but that wall isn't really used for discussion of current movies, so I'll ....".

Then there was the war of words between my Grandson and Richdet, where he stated we thought we owned this wall.

Let's face it I was naive thinking everyone enjoyed my quizzes, when some really saw me monopolizing the wall. Like the old actor who was past his prime and made "one more" movie...and it turned out really bad, it's time to hang it up. I'll look in and see how things are going and do a post now and then, after the smoke clears and those who want to "discuss" movies quit asking "What did you think of ____movie", I don't know what did you think."

Your Friend Rake.

NotaBene  It is amazing how one person can spoil the fun for everybody. Rake King had been wonderful to the Movies Wall. His grandson took over for some time, he was wonderful too. I did not participate because I am not good at this but I did read most of the quizzes and enjoyed them very much. If anybody wishes to comment on movies please go ahead, it is open for everybody. You can post any comment you like but please do not spoil the fun for everybody else.

Please Rake King, do no stop the quizzes, a lot of us enjoy them very much!!

MeiDei  Just watched a video (Ukranian ) of the crash site, they were kind enough to blur the images of the victims. This reminds me of the plane that went down in Russia with the president of Poland and his cabinet aboard - the only difference is the current video does not show armed people firing into the debris & chasing away the few recording it.

Rake King posted on Movies & Reviews  When I came here several years ago, this wall was languishing with very little use. While the quizzes I have offered.takes up a lot of space, in a 24 hour period they take up maybe about 4 hours. Further any time a recent post is in place and I start the quizzes, I do a copy and paste after my final quiz so that person's post is on top.

I am not going to battle(I had my fill of that in the past and left for a while ). Nor do I want "my friends" to feel they must come to my aid over some one or issue. I am easy going and can make room for whatever. So taking a break so some one or group wants to use this wall, is just common courtesy. Who knows maybe Lucianne may offer a quiz wall sometime where many would try their hand at quiz-mastering.

It's not like the Obama admin. came up with an "order" to rule out quizzes. Take a deep breath, and let's see what Susannah has in store.
Maybe you will like it better.
