Rather Read posted on Faith  Many of the children who were killed in Newton were members of St. Rose of Lima parish. They are having a wake or funeral every day for the next five days. The parish priest is Father Luke Suarez and his sister has asked for Christmas cards for him, to let him and the people of Newton know that we are praying for them. He has said that knowing that we are praying for him keeps him going.

Rather Read posted on Main Page The Lobby  My senator Rand Paul gave a very good speech last night and here's part of what he said:

In Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Tang family owns
-- a doughnut shop. Their family fled war-torn Cambodia to come
to this country. My kids and I love doughnuts, so we go there
frequently. The Tang's work long hours. Mrs. Tang
told us they worked through the night to make the donuts. The
Tang family have become valedictorians and national merit
scholars. The Tangs from Cambodia are an American success
story, so Mr. President, don't go telling the Tang family
that they didn't build that.

I've eaten their doughnuts - best ones in town. They do work hard as a family and have made their shop a success. And they did build it.

Rake King  Gee I bet Obama regrets ever making that statement about "you didn't build it yourself". A point I have not seen mentioned is that he (Obama ) forgets that companies pay taxes also, so those roads and bridges he talks about has some company tax money as well. God is he ever anti-business? He's starting to sound like Hugo Chavez.

Rather Read  Honestly, I don't think he realizes just how much that statement offended people. My daughter in law recently started her own business and she works long and hard. I've seen statements where people twist themselves into pretzels to try and explain what Obama "really meant", but I think his message is clear. In his heart of hearts, Obama really does not like the small business owner.

(Last night at the RNC ) Tim Pawlenty: ''Barack Obama has failed us. But look, it’s understandable: A lot of people fail at their first job.''

Rather Read posted on Faith  Please pray for my father. He had a small stroke a few days ago, and right now he is still befuddled from it. I am hoping that now he is home, he will recover more. The dear man is 91 and up until then, he worked three days a week at a museum.

Rather Read posted on Faith  Well, it looks as though my mother will have to go to a nursing home. She can no longer walk and her health issues are beyond what we can take care of. I wrenched my knee trying to move her this weekend. Right now she is in the hospital being treated for a bad UTI. I think she may go the home Monday or Tuesday. We are sad and sorry, but we are not equipped to care for her. All I can do is pray and ask prayer from you all.
October 23 at 18:12 EST .

Yottyhere  You have my heartfelt prayers and thoughts. It is very hard to get to this point in the care of a loved one. But you have done your best.
Having professionals care for her now that she is bedridden is really the best you can do for her. Even though it doesn't seem that way to you now.
Hope your knee gets better.
Prayers for your Mom and your family. Take care.

Nugoddess  Most certainly, prayers from yours truly.

Yotty is correct in that professional care for Mom is probably the best for her. Taking care of the elderly can be very challenging so go easy on yourself.

Take care of that knee!

Surfhut  Get your Mom into the best place you can afford, check in daily if you can to make sure they are giving her proper, respectful care. If she is lucid, bring in as many little things of hers that you can that mean a lot to her so she can look at them and smile. Seeing family every day will give her the biggest smiles!

Don't feel bad. You are doing the best you can for your Mom.

You are in my prayers. So is your knee!

Evajeanne  You've got my prayers for this very difficult decision. There are no two ways about it, it's a tough, tough decision to have to make. I'm so sorry that on top of everything else, you wrenched your knee. Hang in there. Once your Mom is settled, and you visit her regularly, things will be better.

Carolina Kat  Take care of you! That is the one thing in this situation that you can control - prayers for your knee's quick healing!

I can honestly say that I have heard more positive stories about (and from ) those who have made this transition recently. My friend's mother's health has improved dramatically since she moved out of her own house and is getting good and constant care. My cousin added years to my aunt's life by making that move. My mother-in-law enjoys the fellowship of folks her own age and that she doesn't have the concerns of keeping up her house anymore.

RatherRead, this situation may also be far better than you realize. That's my prayer for you and your Mom.

Rather Read posted on Faith  Please pray for my mother. She is 89, her health is failing and she needs more care than we can give her. My father is 90 and he can't do it and all of the children have to work. I fear we will have to put her in a nursing home and it is killing us. Please pray.
October 18 at 10:44 EST .

Escaped commieny  will pray for both her and your family. It will be OK, just monitor the facility, show up unannounced and they will take good care of her. My Dad found a small local, home like facility for my Mom rather than an institutional type and she was well cared for.

Escaped commieny  That might sound cynical but I had a friend that had a stroke while I was there doing her groceries, meds, and check book. Called 911 and took her dog to my house, by the time I got to the hospital they had her hooked up to pain meds but no nutrition. She had no children and her husband was dead. I had to call her adopted niece miles away to raise hell to get her nutrition drips, since I was not family. I went to see her at odd times to make sure she was taken care of, and she lived 3 more years. I just think if you are diligent, it will be OK

Gerty  Miss Rather, if your Father was military, your Mom is entitled to a VA facility. While no facility is as good as 'home', we have had very good care for two of our relatives at such nursing homes. Please look into it; don't forget to follow Miss EC's advice too.

Evajeanne  Of course, you have my prayers. As difficult as this time is, how amazing is it that you still have both parents! My in-laws both turned 91 this year. It's difficult, to be sure, but the moments when they are fully "with it" are so very precious.

Carolina Kat  RR, sometimes the nursing home is able to give better care. It doesn't offer the comfort of home, but it does offer qualified around the clock care. Dropping in is a good idea, your mother will have her advocates.

When my cousin placed my aunt in a nursing home it was one of the best things she could have done for her, and I believe it extended her time and quality of life. Finding the right place is key, so that's what my prayers are, asking God to make a safe and comforting place for your Mom and wisdom for her children to see it.

Rather Read posted on Pet Peeves  There were some people who lived across the street from me who spent a lot of time tinkering with their (mufflerless ) car. The tinkering involved lots of time revving the engine as hard and loud as it would go. Their next-door neighbors called the police numerous times before they finally quit. Me - the noisiest I get is mowing the grass on Sunday afternoon. If I could, I'd ban all music in malls and other spaces. I love the quiet.

BirdsNest  Back in the Day, before we came to our senses we had a small construction company specializing in Colonial and Victorian restoration.
My husband had 2 hard fast rules on the work sites, "NO" loud music, it was understood that offending device would either be drop-kicked or jettisoned out the nearest window, this happened more times than I can count!!! The second was spilling or breaking his coffee cup was grounds for termination!!

Gerty  I am so sorry to hear about your Mother's stroke, Miss RRead. Of course, my prayers are for both of you, but there have been a lot of advances done in this area of geriatrics. If she was recommended for surgery, chances are your Mom is in relatively good shape---she might surprise you and do well--at least this is my prayer for you both.

Rather Read posted on Main Page The Lobby  It happened again. I picked up a nice light mystery (Heavenly Pleasures by Kerry Greenwood ) and was reading along when BAM! A Bush bash. A few pages later, here's another one. The book is set in Australia and the author is Australian as well. I am getting damn SICK and TIRED of this. I love to read. I've given up on TV because I can't stand the coarseness and the belittling of all I hold dear, am I going to have to give up books too?

Rather Read posted on Main Page The Lobby  I am fuming! I was reading a book about knitting. It was Sweater Quest: My Year of Knitting Dangerously and it chronicles the author's attempt to knit a very complicated Fair Isle sweater in a year. Anyway, I'm reading along and guess what -a gratuitous Bush bash. In a knitting book!!!! Am I going to have to give up all contempory reading and confine myself to the classics or to "safe" authors?

Bush bashing. In a knitting book. Just damn!!

Gerty  Look at it this way. Here is another example of how deeply rooted liberalism is implanted in the brain! Liberalism is an obsession. It can't help itself. Woe to he who is infected!
July 7 at 08:09 EST .

Rollingcow  I ran across this in Romance novel. I normally like the author and she writes light-hearted stuff, but during the 'love scene' the woman went on a minor rant about Republicans. Hmm, might be too much information here, but I'm usually too much 'into the moment' to think about politics. I no longer read this author.

July 7 at 10:34 EST .

Evajeanne  There are authors of fiction books that I no longer read due to their decision to enter the political realm. I wonder if they (or their publishers ) decide that specifically bashing Pres. Bush or Conservatives will bring them more readers, different readers or if they just don't care. Obviously, they don't think it'll hurt them in the pocketbook. I never hear any concern over whether it'll lose them current dedicated readers...never.
July 7 at 11:11 EST .

Rightclick  Tell the author that you have quit buying their books. Tell them what you loved about their writing, and then tell them what disturbed you enough to take them off your readers list. There are ways to talk generically about politics that would satisfy both sides of the aisle without naming names or taking sides. They need to know what doesn't work for their readers, then they can decide if their politics trumps their income.
July 7 at 12:15 EST .

Carolina Kat  Unfortunately, this is how the author managed to get her book published. Publishing houses are notoriously liberal. Not so long ago all you needed was a sex scene and nasty language to get your writing published, now you have to throw in liberal propaganda and hurl insults at republicans.

This is the number one reason that I read very few modern books. The number two reason is language and words; most modern works aren't written well. Compare them to Austen or Stevenson or as the new Duchess of Cambridge would say, Lucy Maud Montgomery. The last's childrens books are far better than most anything written in the last fifty years.

Read Wilkie Collins, or if you really want a yarn and someone of the 20th Century, Daphne du Maurier.

Modern books - blck.

Ynaught  Years ago I emailed Ted Rall regarding a cartoon I found offensive. We ended up having an extended email conversation. He is a true believer and I was not able to change his mind in the least. He said he was surprised to find me to be a conservative who was not an uncivil screaming lunatic (My husband might disagree!). I wish I had saved the emails. I would love to go back and re-read them. The nastiness that comes out in his cartoons and most of his writing was absent in the one-on-one correspondence.
