Rollingcow posted on Suggested Reading  I have been listening to books on the Civil War recently-Mr. Cow is a big Civil War buff and over the last 35 years I've gotten a good over-view of the war, but hadn't bothered overly much with the battles. Mr. Cow and the Calf went to Gettysburg last month so I bought Allen C. Guelzo's book 'Fateful Lightning' and his newest 'Gettysburg-the Last Invasion'. I also have them in hardcover and recommend both of them highly if you have any interest in that period at all.

Rollingcow posted on Coffee Klatch  Wow! It's been a while since I've posted. Life has been pretty busy here in the Barn. Winter seemed to linger forever this year and as the school year wears on the kids have more things that need to be done. Mrs. Calf and the kids all went to the Juvenile Diabetes walk, they raised at least a thousand dollars from friends and relatives, Victoria had her first dance recital which I missed because Miss Charlotte was running a fever so I stayed home with her. Victoria did very well, how do I know? She told me of course. Jack joined Cub Scouts and learned how to ride his bicycle, but is still a video game junkie at heart. Charlotte is going to be our tall, skinny girl-you know the kind who can eat anything and never gain an ounce? That's our girl. She's started to talk more now 'Ess' and 'Ease' are my favorites, she has also discovered Doc McStuffin's on Disney Junior so we have to get her all things Doc. I have taken up knitting again, I quit years ago when I started to quilt, but Charlotte loves to go outside so I needed something a bit more portable. I'm getting pretty good at makeing scarfs and started a sweater this morning-we'll see how that goes, but I'm loving it so far. It's sort of Zen and I've been listening to Civil War books on my i-pod. Mr. Cow and the Calf took their dream trip out to Gettysburg last month so I now have my very own set of forager's caps, one blue and one grey not to mention some great shirts, a throw, several coffee cups and a key chain (they went a little overboard on the gifts ). The girls got teddy bears, but they all fight over Jack's musket and flintlock pistol. We are all waiting for the new baby to arrive now and are looking forward to finding out what it will be. We'd all like another boy, but girls are good as well.

BirdsNest  Yes, Mrs. Cow, it has been a long time. Glad to know everyone in the Barn is happy and healthy. With Miss Charlotte out and about it must keep you on your toes. Whatever the baby turns out to be, it will be in a great environment in which to grow. The Barn will be even more active!! Glad to see you back posting, you have been missed.

Balogreene  Sounds like life is good in the barn.

Rollingcow  The baby should be here sometime in November I'm told. We have a new great-nephew coming in August to satisfy that 'I need to hold a baby' urge. Victoria graduates from pre-school tonight and I'll see if I can get something posted from that. Jack is now 4 foot 5 and weighs in at about 80 pounds, I think he's going to be a very big boy.

Ole buzzard  Good to see you again, Mrs. Cow, and to hear all the doings at the Barn. I was not aware that there is a new Calf on the way. Did I miss something?

Linder  Agree with Gram77....with the crazy news of these days we need your straight shooting comments. Missed you and your family.

Rollingcow posted on The Range 2nd Amendment  Okay, I've considered advice here and from my NRA instructor on various hand guns and have decided on a revolver. It is a complete embarrassment to be unable to operate the slide on my Glock 19 even with the 'cheat' Mr. Cow bought for it. Not sure what I've done to my poor wrist over the years but it sure refuses to do what I want it to.

Ole buzzard  Yotty also had the arthritis problem that affected her ability to rack the slide on a semi-auto and pull the trigger on a revolver. Our solution was a Taurus PT-25 .25 caliber semi-auto. It has a tip-up barrel that allows her to manually load the first round, and the magazine holds nine more. Sure, it's a small bore, but loaded with hollow points, can still inflict serious damage.

Rollingcow posted on Coffee Klatch  Victoria announced to her mother today that when she's a teenager she will no longer have diabeties. Mrs. Calf expalined to her that unless they find a cure she, Victoria, will always be a diabetic to which Victoria said 'Even in Texas?'. Just thought you Texans out there would like to know you live in a Miracle State-I'll be moving there just as soon as someone comfirms I won't be diabetic when I get there.

Rollingcow posted on Main Page The Lobby  So, I'm sitting here at my computer playing some mindless game last night when my telephone rang (the house phone not my cell ). The young man on the other end said he was calling for Chris Christie, my first reaction was to tell him that Mr. Christie wasn't here, but I controlled myself. Apparently New Jersery is having elections this year and Christie is running for re-election (yeah, I was shocked, I get little to no news under the rock I live under ). It seems that, as a registered Republican, I should feel compelled to donate money to his bid. I asked who was a Republican to which the feller told me that we all were and seemed a little put out when I told him that I had never kissed Obummer on the lips and that he should probably put in a call to Doprah for my share of the donation. He didn't seem very happy.

   Gerty  Ya done good, Mrs.Cow!

My sister lives in NJ and thinks the world of Christie. She says the governor's recent smooching with Obama is just a sign of how far Christie will go to get things for his people!

I have to have a serious talk with her.

Gerty, tell your sister that people that do things like that, are sometimes called whores. Yes, you need to have a serious talk with her, hope you can clarify things in her mind. And from what we see in the news, there are still lots of NJ people suffering living in less than ideal conditions because NOTHING has been done to really help. And the others in NY are just as bad off.

Rollingcow posted on Coffee Klatch  I'm putting this here hoping that Eagle's Dominion will see it as well as sharing it with everyone else. Charlotte wanted to come home with me today so I let her since I was just going to check my e-mail and look in here for a minute. The kids love the videos posted so we went to the Suggested Listening wall and I clicked on the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy for Charlotte to watch, she just loved it, we listened to it about fifteen times before Mrs. Calf came to get her for Mass. Later on during Charlotte's usual 'whiney time' before she falls asleep for the night I sat her on my lap and we watched the Bugle Boy over and over until she fell asleep, thanks for the help, ED and, of course, thank you Patty, Maxine and Laverne.

Rollingcow posted on Dogs, Cats & Critters  I let the Sheltie boys out the minute I get up, I figure if I have to use the bathroom so do they. I go get them their bones (Mr. Cow calls them cookies )grab a cup of coffee and let them back in. This morning Gus hesitated before coming up the stairs (usually they come in side by side )but no Cosmo. I finally went out to see what he was doing and noticed a section of the fence had blown down in our wild winds last night. I came back in and put on my shoes and coat then spent the next twenty minutes running around in the dark in my pjs (okay, sweat pants and a t-shirt ) calling for him. All of our dogs have tracking chips, but I kept thinking a fat lot of good that would do if he got hit by a car. Coming back around the other side of the Barn I heard little feet scrambling in the leaves and here came Cosmo out from under my lilac bush, but he wouldn't let me touch him. Shelties are very good at staying just out of reach, it was bred into them back when a well-trained sheepdog was priceless-it pretty much sucks when you try to catch them and bring them inside safely. I finally coaxed him around to our side of the house thinking he'd run in when he saw Gus, no dice. I opened the door to the other side of the house and said 'come on, Cos, lets go see the girls' and he ran right in. I'm counting my blessings this morning and planning on a LOT of recall training.

Linder  Great story! Good to know others have had to go out into the cold night to fetch a dog. Our neighbor recently saw a coyote nearby and so we stopped letting Lad, our Bichon, out alone. During the night recently I forgot and let him out...when he didn't respond to my call I was getting my shoes and coat on when he appeared at the door. Cannot believe that dog rules our life like he does.

Rollingcow  I know what you mean, Buzzard. Gus jumps up on the side of the bed and sticks his nose in my face if he wants to go out. The Sheltie girls fit into the chaos on the kids' side of the house, but Gus and Cosmo seem to rule this side.

Rollingcow posted on Coffee Klatch  Last night Mr. Cow and I went to a CC class, I've never really done that before since I didn't need one to get the permit, but there was something very attractive about being able to carry concealed in most states in the union so I went. The instructor was hilarious-he is both a Vetran and a police officer, as a matter of fact several of the others in class were also one or the other, many both, we even had a retired judge sitting with us tossing in answers to legal questions that came up. I signed up for formal shooting classes, I've never done that either, my Dad taught us pretty well so this is all new ground for me. Will I be buying one of those pink things below? Nope, don't like pink, basic black will do me just fine. I did find it interesting that only state that doesn't allow people to carry is Illinois, no wonder Chicago is such a mess.

Ole buzzard  Good for you, Mrs. Cow! Yotty and I both have our carry permits, and went to a class back in November. Illinois is, indeed, a mess. I was reading somewhere last week that Governor Quinn only won three counties, yet was still elected. How sad is that?

Rollingcow posted on Coffee Klatch  Here's another story for you. We took Miss Victoria to Build A Bear Workshop yesterday to get her some new clothes for her bear. I'm afraid I went a bit overboard on that, I love to see her little face light up while we add loot to her pile. On the way out she insisted she had to hold my hand and I told Mrs. Calf that the kid knew what side her bread was buttered on to which Victoria replied 'and I know which side to bite, too, Grandma'. It made even a man passing us laugh. Life is never dull with children.
