Ole buzzard I was poking around one of my railroading sites this morning and stumbled across this. Combine my love of trains and mountain scenery, this will definitely be added to my bucket list.
Ynaught Across the street from our hotel in Auckland is Albert Park where there are some of the most magical looking trees! They are huge and intricate and I just know they are filled with hobbits and gnomes and fairies of some sort or other!

Balogreene The Space Shuttle Discovery. I watched her fly in on the back of a plane. Can you see the burn marks and missing tiles? You can in person.

Balogreene I love this one, I think I remember its from the 1960's, when you land the plane, you unhook the back, and drive away in the car that is the front. Again, Udvar-Hazy museum, near Dulles Airport, northern VA.

Balogreene More from Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum, near Dulles Airport, VA. These are actual satellites, and yes they are as tiny as they look.

Balogreene My sister is visiting and today we went to the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. It's $15 per car to park. They have the space shuttle Discovery, the Enola Gay, the Concorde, the Sr-71 Spy plane, a ton of satellites, a Pan Am Clipper, experimental planes, fighters, German and Japanese planes, a 707, and more. They also have an IMAX, and a conservatory. The building is so huge, the planes look small. Here's the Enola Gay.

Nugoddess Anyone have a favorite camping site? We're starting our preliminaries for retirement and we plan on getting an SUV/trailer setup.
Surfhut Remember when akcamper gave us nearly daily reports of his camping trek through the US up into Alaska with his JRT? Why not email him?
If you want camping sites that have great natural beauty but close enough to drive to interesting metro stuff, I can give you some tips for the areas around San Antonio, Tulsa, Northern CA, Washington State.

Rake King As O.B. has often remarked, America is full of beauty. Permit me to suggest as you travel you get to know the locals where you visit...there is more to America than a lovely sunset.

Eagle's Dominion We love Bowman Lake on the west side of Glacier National Park. It's about 35 miles north of the entrance to the park. Mid Sept. is the time we enjoy the most. Mostly retired folks up there at that time of the year.Very common to see bears, deer and an occasional wolf. :- )
Balogreene I was on the Cape May-Lewes ferry (across the Delaware Bay ) and met a retired couple who each year took different routes around the country. That year they had gone North from Florida by some route I forgot, all the way to Maine. They were going home on Rte 1 mostly, but as coastal as they could. It seemed like fun, if you like to camp.

Escaped commieny It is ironic that Robin posted a trip to Yosemite the same week I received this from our cap Marine : Historic bridges of Yosemite Valley under siege
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/07/07/his toric-bridges-yosemite-valley-under-siege Enviroweenies want to destroy 3 bridges. The claim is so that rivers can be returned to pristine state. Real goal is to eliminate possibility of human traffic. Gas station inside Yosemite has already been removed. This is one of those “If we do not act in sufficient numbers, they win” projects. Article claims comments will be accepted until September, but no method is provided for their submission. After some rummaging around, I located the following: Yosemite National Park, Superintendent
Attn: Stoneman, Ahwahnee, Sugar Pine Bridges removal
P.O. Box 577
Yosemite, CA 95389
Comments can also be faxed to 209/379-1294

Escaped commieny good grief that is so violent, I have DAV friends that are retired navy and one a submariner, how did they do it? I have been on the CG Confidence but she was in the Manatee River but she went out to retrieve the Solid Rocket Boosters off Jax coast and Manny was the diver, again, how does someone do this? It is so brutal, I was in a lawn chair, reading, in about 3 inches of water, when a wave came in ripped me out, tore my glasses off, drug me through the sand and I had burns for weeks, I can not image guys going to do this.

Ynaught On a trip to the Galapagos on a small ship, we experienced incredibly rough seas while crossing the equator. This is apparently usual and didn't last more than an hour or so, as I remember. The cruise line makes this crossing at night when everyone is in bed and you are warned to expect to be tossed about. It was almost fun for me as I do not suffer from sea sickness. Some of our boatmates were not so lucky. That being said - I would NOT want to make a crossing with seas like in the video!
