Birdsnest

BirdsNest posted on Gardening & Landscaping  I did not have a proper garden this year. Just a few raised beds that quickly went "native". I did get some peppers in the ground and 20+ Eggplant(several varieties ). Those plants were put in ground that had never been planted, they are over 5 ft tall.
I did not have a real garden but friends gifted me with all sorts of things for canning. My figs did well and so did the blueberries, so I jarred lots of jam. It has been selling well. Some people at the flea market gave me empty jars(so helpful! ) Tomatoes came and I canned them for myself for winter use. Peppers, lots of them at various times for pepper relish. Hot peppers for hot relish. Watermelon for pickled watermelon rind. I have made 4 batches(each takes 6 days to complete ), but that's just plain WR pickle. I decided to try a small batch with the addition of 1 Ghost pepper. Delicious, tastes like cinnamon red hot candies. Friends tasted them and bought all 7 jars. So I got 3 more melons. I made one batch with 2 Ghost peppers-got a request for that, it will be jarred today. The next batch has 1 Ghost pepper....like the first batch I did. I still have one melon uncut...I have to wait until I free up the big pot!! I must say it has been a huge amount of work, but it has kept me busy and centered.

BirdsNest  I forgot my newest find...."Cowboy Candy". Candied Jalapenos. The syrup is to die for. I doubled the batch and doubled the syrup, had lots of syrup leftover so I jarred it too. Took some dill pickles, drained them and poured the syrup over them. Into the refrigerator, they are delicious. Some people use the syrup in potato salad.
I also had a request from a customer to jar any leftover WR syrup, she would buy it for adding to smoothies.

BirdsNest  Thanks ladies. She ended up having a quadruple bypass. As of yesterday, she is in stepdown. I have not seen her, she is in the Norfolk hospital. I will try to take a day to go over there. Her daughter is with her. Prayers are appreciated. She still has many weeks of recovery ahead.

BirdsNest  It's possible she will be released from the hospital today to check into a nursing facility locally. The same one Hagar came to. I know the best of the nurses and CNAs. I will visit as often as I can. She has loads of friends so she won't be lonely. And it will give her daughter a break.

BirdsNest posted on Recipes  My question today is has anyone tried the copper chef pans?? I really want to get the set but want to be sure it is worth the almost $100. Thanks. Not doing much cooking but that will change once my friend gets moved. I spend nights with her because of health issues and she cooks dinner for us.

MeiDei  I've heard a warning that some on the market are copper plated & fail the scratch test. True or not I can't say.
I have 3 ceramic lined pans that were great at first but are disappointing now, [no, I didn't use metal utensils or meat on the bone in them] tho' I still use them. Like you, I'm interested about the copper ones & long term use.

s

My Revere-ware is 45 years old, copper bottom, held up well and only 1 knob broke off and a few handle screws landed in the dishwasher strainer and were retrieved. Maybe I just didn't use them enough, I hate to cook. I bought a bunch of cast iron outdoor cookware anticipating when the SHTF during the last regime, never been used, along with the solar oven collecting dust in the garage. Me and my big ideas, oh and the earth-boxes are empty.....sigh

BirdsNest posted on Coffee Klatch  Hello all. I am fine just really busy. And I have a lousy Internet connection. I get frustrated trying to type on my cell( like now ). I seriously miss Hagar and am forcing myself to garden. Still waiting for the farmer to till the garden. It has rained for several days so it gets postponed. I am helping out a friend who had a stroke and has found she has heart issues.
I miss Balogreene especially her recipes. Not that I would make them but she impressed me with those complicated dishes. I would like to know that her sister and mom are settling into their new home.

BirdsNest posted on Health & Diet  I just had a delicious new onion...
Pink. It is a sweet onion. Kind of looks like a red onion but very delicious. I cut one up and cooked it with chicken legs in oven. Only other addition was S&P. The chicken was bland compared to the onion. I ate all of the onion.

BirdsNest  The store must have gotten those by mistake because when I asked the produce people they had a blank look. Will probably never see them again. Maybe I will ask the manager next time I see him.

BirdsNest  The onions would not sell at the original price so they deep discounted to move them out. They do not plan to bring them in anymore.

BirdsNest posted on Blessings  This Thursday marked the one year anniversary of my beloved Hagar's passing. A rough week for sure. I spent the day in mostly silence asking friends to refrain from calling or texting me. I spoke only a few words to the lady at the funeral home when I went by to pay on my bill. Otherwise I just reflected on life and love. I am blessed with many friends.

BirdsNest  Thanks Hope. Earlier that week I got a call from a lady that used to have our UPS route. She is retired but she saw a man in a local diner that had a ponytail that triggered a remembrance of Hagar and she was moved to phone me. Hagar was fond of her and she of him. Its times like that that grab my heart. Folks that get reminded of him and share......

MeiDei  It's good for you to share/talk about him, part of the healing process. Sometimes we even learn something special from others that may surprise, delight or explain an unknown. I believe God provided the prompt & moved that lady to call you - & am glad she did. Consider it a blessing upon which more will be added to.

StormCnter  The heartache of losing someone we love never goes away, but I have read that after the first year anniversary, it's a bit easier to face the important days in your life because it's no longer the "first without". I hope that is true for you. Precious memories are a solace, but you already know that.

BirdsNest posted on Recipes  Yesterday I made 2 loaves of bread from recipes I got in my e-mail from bread machine diva. One was Banana Oat bread and the other was Raisin bread. I loved the raisin bread because it had lots of raisins in it and a touch of cinnamon. I have made another banana bread that was good, but this one was better. Half of each loaf is bagged to give away. I am a pushover for bread so I have to give most of it away to keep myself from eating too much of it.

I don't think I want to make this a double decker cake, but a single Bundt cake would be delicious. I have had chocolate chips on the brain this week......I have several chocolate chip cookie recipes earmarked but I think a cake would be better. Easier to take one slice out of and gift the rest. Cookies would be too easy to hoard and eat and eat and eat.....

BirdsNest  Made Hawaiian bread recipe into rolls last night. I will have to get someone else's take on them....I really couldn't taste them. I have the bulk of the bread to give away today. I still have half a loaf of Rasin bread left. I will probably give that to the chickens. I have gotten tired of eating it( Did I really just say that? ).
