The Range
2nd Amendment

Safetydude  I really did spend an hour at the range yesterday with my Ruger SR-45
after I had the Crimson Trace laser installed. What a treat.
You don't aim, just point and pull. Right hand left hand, doesn't matter.
Later this week I'm going to the outdoor range to check out how far out
I can still hit a target.

Bettijo  Is this gun too heavy for an elderly woman?

   Safetydude  That's a question I can't answer in a venue like this.

Here are some thoughts, not instructions.
If you can hold the weight of the gun, which is about two pounds, most of which is in the slide, you should be able to fire it.
However, since most of the weight is in the slide this gun tends to be a bit front heavy, even with a full magazine, so a stiff wrist is required to hold the barrel up. Also, it's a .45; it means a pretty heavy recoil. I use a 'modified' Weaver grip with my left hand wrapped around and supporting my right wrist, about where a watch would be worn. I let my right hand pivot up at the wrist to absorb most of the recoil. By trying not to move my arms I can keep a basic sight picture through the recoil.

So back to your question; no, I don't think the gun is too heavy for an 'elderly' woman. Being able to pull the trigger and handle the gun safely might be something else.

Fireball27  Bettijo check out the Colt Mustang 380. This is a small gun I'm sure you would be able to handle. With a laser sight, it should do the trick. Some gun ranges will rent you a gun like this so you can tell if it will work for you. I might get one myself.

Ole buzzard  I love how the BATFE invited "public comment" about their "proposed" ban on M855 5.56 ammunition, when, in fact, the newly published 2014 BATFE Regulations have ALREADY banned it.

Welcome to Obama's America.

Ole buzzard  I had occasion to talk to one of our county deputies one day last week. During the course of the conversation, I asked him if it would be permissible to set up a firing range on our property. He said that it is, as long as there was an adequate backstop behind my target. I had him come to the house and showed him where I want to place it, and he said it was acceptable. Now I can go shoot any time the spirit moves me!

FlatCityGirl  Paul R. Beane [now retired after 60 years on the radio] is one of our more Conservative radio personalities here in town.

He was guest host on one of the local AM talkers a few months back, and the subject was The Left and Gun Control.

The talk turned to how 0smidgen and the Left would like to disarm every American, and how gun sales have sky rocketed since Big 0 was elected.

This is Gun country up here in the Panhandle, and folks don't take kindly to Gun Grabbers.

A caller [obviously a New York City transplant] called in to the show and was complaining about how many guns people own, and how people didn't need that many guns, and how he knew people who had enough fire arms in their house to arm half of Texas.

Paul Bean said, "Well, I don't have enough for half of Texas, but I've got enough for everybody on my block."

Fireball27  When someone tries to tell me "only the police and military should have guns", I ask them if they would like to live where that is the case. They are afraid to answer because they know they are wrong. I then point out the only place where this is the case is in a prison. And would you care to know how many, and what kinds of weapons they find in prisons? That's when they try to change the subject.

Ole buzzard  Three more high profile shootings in less than a week. And the disinformation starts coming out about the Las Vegas shooting. The husband of the pair was killed by a police bullet, not his wife's. She, then, took her own life.

Too many shootings in too short a time, and IMMEDIATELY the Lamestream Media comes out blaming the Tea Party, NRA, etc., etc., ad nauseam!

False Flags, every last one of them, I say. I'm convinced that the Obama administration will do ANYTHING to foment enough rage to get us to shoot first.

Ole buzzard  After the Santa Barbara killings, I was appalled by the fact that the father of the young man killed at the deli used his camera time not to grieve for the loss of his son, but to try to advance his gun control agenda. What parent does that?????

My guess is that this is another false flag. Twitter is alive with erroneous information. People are saying that all six victims were shot; that all six victims were young women (only two were ); and all kinds of misinformation and disinformation.

This is the one Mike got me.

And just as an aside.
I don't know what you pay for ammo in GA but I bought a box of 50 Federsl .45ACP hollow point rounds for twenty-six dollars + tax, here in FL.

Safetydude  Ran fifty rounds through it today. I guess I'm a bit rusty...

I had good groupings but they were all left of center. I never thought to compensate for the wing blowing 7-10kts right to left. Didn't think the wind would have much effect at 25 yards.

No flags to remind you.

Ole buzzard  The velocity of a .45 at 25 yards is considerably less than a .357, so windage effect will be exaggerated.

I got 300 rounds of 45cal target loads to burn at an INDOOR range north of Atlanta this weekend.
It's our son's fortieth birthday and he wants to try the Ruger he got me for my birthday.

(We're giving him a "Big Green Egg" for his birthday )

Ole buzzard  I guess I should come here to read more often. I also go to a range north of Atlanta (even though I'm 60 miles south ) called Range, Guns & Safes. One of the nicest ranges around, and friendly staff. It would have been nice to meet face to face, and I need to get some range time in.

I'll let you know when we plan our next trip to Atlanta.

The range Mike took me to is in Canton and is named
"Hi Caliber".

Are you near Macon or Thomaston? We take 475 around Macon but could make detour and meet for lunch.
