Mildred posted on Main Page The Lobby  It's the new year so that must mean we have to be attacked by the unwanted ads. Now we also have recommended videos that you can't stop or delete. Anyone know how to rid Lucianne of these annoyances? Seems that even ABP can't stop them.

Mildred  Hi Kono: They were all over the Home Page. I used the old tried and true remedy by right clicking the ad and then click on Inspect Element. I then deleted all x's I could find, clicked on debugging, etc., but I still had the ads. I finally left the site and just tried it again now. So far, I have no ads but I do have the header 'recommended videos' off to the side of the page. I haven't had ads for months and hope I've solved the problem today. Also hope you don't have to deal with them.

Tulsa  Morning. I tried Edge (Win. 10 browser that replaced IE ) Firefox and Brave with ABP. On the home page, far right, there is a straight line with the words 'trending recommended videos' or something like that, but no videos and no other ads. If I scroll down the line and words go down the page too.

It's Friday morning. It first appeared yesterday or the day before. I hope the ads don't come back too. They are all over Drudge without ABP. They are so distracting. No, they are obnoxious.

No ad has ever enticed me to run out and buy something. Quite the opposite.

Come On Spring! What worse than usual winter.

Mildred posted on Computers &Tech Issues  More Microsoft problems. First, I lost my internet wireless connection last night. Finally got that up and running by connecting via ethernet this morning. For the past month Windows has been automatically updating every night even though I have the setting at 'I choose what updates to download and install.' Now when I click on 'Windows Update' on the Start button I get a message that Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because service is not running. You may need to restart your computer. Can't get any response from my computer. Anyone help?

Tulsa  Can't address your connection but Win. 7 stopped working in pieces. MS said they would stop sending updates for Window and MSSE and they did it far earlier than they promised.

Imo, 'It's dead, Jim.' (Bones to Kirk ) Replace it.

The laptop lasted longer than the desktop. We replaced both last July.

Virus protection in Win 10 is Defender and it's far smoother than MSSE. I prefer it.

I turned off and deleted lots and lots of things. And I only bought a basic Dell. The most basic.

Best wishes.

Mildred  Thanks Tulsa. I've searched the internet and I still see info that Win 7 will continue to update until 2020. Maybe. Anyway, I got everything working except my wireless connection to this computer. I may need to replace the adaptor. The wireless works for my tablet.

The daily updates I get automatically now (which I don't want and thought I stopped ) are Definition Update for MSSE KB2310138 followed by 1.257....(serie of different numbers )and are all optional which I never install. When I review Installed History I get the list of updates but when I go to uninstall updates, they aren't listed so I can't uninstall them. Don't know if they are installed or not. The KB2310138 was offered in 2011 but I bought this computer in 2015 and I can't find that it was ever installed. Also the info says that it was replaced by another update and maybe I can't update it now. Weird.

As I said earlier, I'm leaning toward a MAC and my daughter has sent me a great review of what I should probably get if I do buy the MAC. I also have a neighbor who is willing to let me use her MAC to try out. I let it go too long to buy before Christmas but I will be exploring that in January. Still having too many medical issues to give it the attention I need to make any decisions. I'm getting better but things change daily. Hope you and your family are all well. Again, thanks!!!

StormCnter  Win 7 cannot update if you have the updates turned off, Mildred. I have mine set at "Never check for Windows updates". I did this on the recommendation of my tech guy. He has his computers set the same way. I've been running Win 7 since I bought the computer about five years ago.

Mildred  Thanks StormCnter. I still have mine set at 'I choose what updates to download and install' and am still getting the 'successful' optional Security Essential updates daily in the Update History. When I check the installed updates, they haven't been installed. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems. This all started a few weeks ago when I lost a number of odd things--I think my provider had problems because my neighbors mentioned their internet and phone were not working. I'm not real tech savvy but I can get everything I need but the wireless router is not working correctly. Need to wait until after the holidays to work on this. Thanks and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Have you tried Brave. browser. No ads. I did install ABP (AdBlockPlus ) on all browsers. I never use IE. It's the most faulty, holey, lousy, malware ridden browser out there. Microsoft stopped updating it and you;re asking for trouble using it. Just what I've read.

Hope you are exceedingly well.

Tulsa  I'm sorry to hear you've had an especially bad year. I never want to hear that. You are in my prayers.

The only way I come out the other side is by surrendering to the Lord. I just submit completely to Him and put one foot in front of the other. Then I praise Him for his love and mercy and for delivering me.

I don't want to learn a Mac and never plan to do so. I like Windows and am in Win 10.

Keep in touch my friend. I'm here infrequently.

Family in SC had major surgery. Praise the Lord, did beautifully. We've had two out patient surgeries here, recovery is 3 less than that, so it's simply agonizingly slow and boring.

And then there is blood work for another matter. This too shall pass.

Hold on, Mildred. It's going to be ok.

Mildred  Tulsa, a quick note to thank you for your prayers, My prayers are for you and your family also. I find that prayer is sometimes the only way to make it through the day.

Getting back to the computer stuff, I still can't get rid of the stupid ad for Ivana Trump's book. I'm sure we will start getting more and more ads if Lucianne doesn't get smarter and then there will be fewer site visitors. Fewer people are even looking at the Connection now.

I decided I would try a Mac because I hate Win 10 and don't know what is coming next. Win 7 won't keep working much longer. If and when I change to a Mac I'll let you know if I can maintain my sanity!

I'll be thinking of you, Tulsa. Best wishes.

Not inspect element, right click adblock ad or adblock bar, then on prechecked screen check add to list.

I think you have simply forgotten the drill. Stay in FF and forget IE and you'll be OK. OK? lol

I continue to pray the Lord delivers you from pain.

Also there a avatars with motion at GoComics, I right click on those, add to list and they are permanently gone. I hate ads!!

Mildred  Tulsa: In IE you need to right click on the ad (see our discussion below for Aug 13 ) and inspect element, etc. Right clicking on adblock ad or adblock bar doesn't work in IE. The ads are gone in FF. When you right click on the ABP icon on the right side of the task bar in IE, you can click on settings and disable ad blocking on the sites you want to see ads. Who would want to do that? But, there is no way to block ads on specific sites. Since this is happening only on Lucianne they must be doing something in their programming to block adblock plus.

Yes I know what has to be done to remove ads in IE. And it has to be done every time you clear your browser cache. That is one of a thousand reasons I don't use IE.

I use FF so I don't have ads Evah! Any-Where. Once and done, Mildred. Save yourself!!!

I see Lastest Articles under the must reads, but not trending articles. I click 'latest posts' in the box on the main page to see what is trending with Ldotters. I've already read the headlines at Drudge.

I'll never be a lo-fo, but I have reached TMI (too much information )...most of which is garbage.

I only had to do it once bc I use the FF browser. The ads have not returned, except when I turn off ABP each day to read the cartoon. See steps above to read cartoon.

I clicked the hamburger icon in FF (three horizontal lines upper right corner )(bun, patty, bun - in case you don't know 'the hamburger'....that is so hilarious ), clicked Options and fine tuned each category. I surf with the sound off. I don't need no steenking beeps and tones.

You go, Girl, on the walking. You are doing so well and I'm so pleased for you. Sitting still is awful. I don't wait well. Never have. So I can honestly imagine being immobile 24/7 and it does sound awful. My mental health would be in danger!

Unless I'm too sick to hold my head up, I would require a pc to surf and play games to keep from going squirrely. Keep up the good work.

I've been mobile within the house--I don't have stairs--so I get around fairly well and am able to get to my computer, TV, refrigerator, etc. The only thing I really miss is going outside. There was an auto update to FF yesterday. The new screen is deep blue. Always browse in private.

I recommend one thing - privacy settings under options.

Click the hamburger
Then click Options.
Then Privacy.

The box that says 'Tracking' should have a check mark.
FF will: ...there's a box w/down arrow - select 'Use Custom Settings'
Check 'Always use private browsing mode'
Check 'Accept cookies from sites
accept third party cookies (box ) select 'Never'

I'm being paged...must scoot. If the above isn't clear, let me know.

I have no idea why ABP does this but it only takes a few seconds and the ads are gone--until next Saturday.

Tulsa  I tried to look below to see if I could find your notes. I remember you said you clicked 'debugger'. Try placing your cursor on any ad and right clicking and see if that screen comes on up on the bottom half of the page. See if after clicking debugger, right click again on any ad and see if you get a drop down screen with options.

I just can not remember what the options were but it's pretty much common sense. There are only 4 or so choices, so you can try them all until you hit pay dirt and then do each ad. I'll say a prayer for you.

Also try the ABP icon and see if there are options there in IE....but if I remember correctly there were none. I just don't understand IE 11.

Please consider going to Firefox and save yourself!

StormCnter  And good morning right back.
A few months ago, I had strange things going on in my computer and couldn't find the reason. Nothing worked to clear it up. Ken sent a list of programs he had found helpful and had thoroughly checked out:

I already had CCleaner, so chose Malwarebytes from his list, installed it, ran it, allowed it to delete the problems it found, and then my own computer mess was cleared up.

I have Malwarebytes set to run nightly on my computer now. I run CCleaner and Spybot manually when I think about it.

All is running well now. It's good to have L-Dotter friends who know more than we do. [grin]

Mildred  Finally got back on Lucianne this morning--it's only 6:30 am here! I tried all the right clicking before I commented and nothing worked. I tried different settings also. When I filter by Easy List the only thing I get when I right click is the usual Windows list--copy, print, etc. When I had the other problem a few weeks back I cleaned up files I don't usually use and forgot I had deleted Malwarebytes. I'll try that this morning. Maybe that's the file I need. I'll get back to you later, after some breakfast and coffee! I did use CCleaner but that didn't help although I'll also try that this morning and clear the registry. Thanks for caring so much and getting back to me so quickly.

Tulsa  Thank you Storm C for the info.

...and Mildred so glad you're at least back at Lucianne.

I know you are attached to IE, but you could eliminate all this heartache by switching to Firefox. The only time I use IE is when I need to print a document..a bank stmt for instance. IE is not even close to the security offered in Firefox. ...and no I don't own stock in Firefox. I truly hate to see you having these problems repeatedly.

StormC is correct CCleaner will not remove a virus. Run Malwarebytes.

And to find that screen with debugger in the tool bar last night I was in Firefox and right clicked on a faint list of numbers where the ads used to be at Lucianne. I think? you may right click on blank space. Then a box comes up and click on 'Inspect Element (Q )'...then you'll see jibberish code and that tool bar with debugger on the bottom half of the page. Try to take it from there.

I'll check back.

Mildred  Tulsa and StormCnter: Thanks so much. My free trial of Malwarebytes has expired and I'm 'frugal' so decided to try anything else that is free first. (I only have one computer and all the offers usually include multiple computers. ) I then installed Spybot. Ran the search and destroy--all okay. Cleaned the cookies and temp files, etc. It was a busy morning. Finally I decided to check the right click on ads that Tulsa has been telling me about. I can't believe it but I found the Inspect Element near the bottom of the list and clicked on that. How stupid could I have been!!! There was the debugger. After clicking on debugger, I clicked on the red button that had a '5' (that's how many ads I had ) and I'm ad free. Tulsa, I am writing those notes down so I won't forget. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Lucianne friends are the best. Have a great weekend.

P.S. I have Firebox installed and find it is so much faster than IE and use it for quick searches. I've used IE for so many years, it's hard to change at this age.

Tulsa  I'm jumping for joy. Good for you.

First Malwarebytes has a free edition. Once the trial addition expires you don't buy the premium, you update the definitions I think and carry on. Just don't click buy or try premium anything else and you'll be fine'll revert to the free addition.

If you plan to install Malwarebytes again, do not, repeat Not, try the premium addition...skip to the free addition. You'll have to look carefully and not bubble or unbubble premium addition and install the trial addition from the beginning. Then you update the definitions before you use it.

I don't like change either, but you will find you don't get bugs in Firefox like you do in IE. You won't lose ABP and get ads. It will not let you make mistakes. It warns you about sites and software so you have to think twice and you avoid problems.

It's hard to help like this. I can't show you screen shots, but we can take this to the computer/tech wall and I'll help all I can with questions about Firefox. That little hamburger icon has all the goodies in it.

And isn't it amazing you just saw the 'right click on ads'. I find if I read instructions several times I get it...sometimes. lol. In person conversations are so much easier especially if I can show you on a pc screen.

This isn't easy, but you have done beautifully.

Be advised I am not a tech in any sense of the word.

Praise the Lord Jesus for helping Mildred.
