Ole buzzard

Ole buzzard posted on Photography  Another of my favorite locomotives, Pere Marquette 1225, owned and operated by the Steam Railroading Institute. It also has a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement, like locomotive 765 in the picture below. Both were built by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima OH, 1225 in 1941, and 765 in 1944. Both were built to the same blueprints, with some minor cosmetic difference in placement of appliances such as air compressors.

Ole buzzard posted on Jokes  One evening a husband, thinking he was being funny, said to his wife, “Perhaps we should start washing your clothes in Slim Fast. Maybe it would take a few inches off of your butt!”

His wife was not amused, and decided that she simply couldn’t let such a comment go unrewarded.

The next morning the husband took a pair of underwear out of his drawer. “What the Hell is this?” He said to himself as a little “dust” cloud appeared when he shook them out.

“April,” he hollered into the bathroom, “why did you put talcum powder in my underwear?”

She replied with a snicker, “It’s not talcum powder It’s ‘Miracle Grow!’”

Ole buzzard posted on Dogs, Cats & Critters  I haven't posted a picture of the Pugs in a while, so here they are. Front to back, we have Mabel, Toby, Winnie, and Sally. Mabel has been through a rough patch since she was diagnosed with diabetes in December, 2014. She weighed 17 pounds at the time, and for some unknown reason, she started losing weight, and kept losing. It got so bad that we had to take her to the University of Georgia Veterinary Training Hospital for diagnosis. At that point, she was down to 9.7 pounds. They found some odd things about her metabolism and put her on a hydrolyzed protein diet. She is now back up to 14.5 pounds, full of energy, and even her coat is better than it has EVER been. She is even growing hair in places she never had it before.

Ole buzzard posted on Jokes  Some time ago, a young Orangeman wooed and married a Papist maiden. After the marriage, the young Orangemen also converted to Catholicism and became a Papist himself.

After some months, he still couldn't reconcile the fact that he was now a Catholic and no longer a Protestant, so he went to his parish priest for guidance. The priest told him to keep repeating to himself "I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant. I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant. I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant." He also added, "You keep saying that to yourself, and soon enough you'll get it through that thick Orange skull of yours that you're a Catholic, and not a Protestant."

So off he went, muttering under his breath "I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant." over and over.

Some weeks later, the priest was making his rounds of the parish and decided to stop in and visit the newlyweds. He knocked on the door, and the young bride opened it and invited Father in. As soon as he entered he got a whiff of something that one just doesn't smell in a good Catholic house on a Friday. He asked "Mary, where is Sam?" to which she replied, "Why, Father, he's in the kitchen."

Father went into the kitchen, where he found Sam ladeling gravy over a great, huge steak, muttering "You're a trout, not a steak. You're a trout, not a steak. You're a trout, not a steak."

Ole buzzard posted on Photography  For this rail adventure, we'll head north to the White Pass & Yukon, a tourist line that travels between Skagway AK and the US/Canada border in British Columbia.

The White Pass & Yukon's "rotary fleet" consisting of vintage snowplow #3 (Cooke - 1899 ) is marching upgrade trailed by twin steam locomotives #73 (Baldwin 2-8-2 blt. 5-47 ) and #69 (Baldwin 2-8-0 blt. 4-07 ) and coach 211 as it heads for White Pass summit and the Canadian border to do battle with the snow drifts in the time honored tradition. This is the task for which she was built 111 years ago. The train is traversing the high line and is just shy of 16 miles from Skagway and tidewater but has already climbed over 2000 feet. Here the train is curling over the curved wooden trestle of bridge 15C and into one of two tunnels on the line (250 ft long tunnel 15 ). This shot was taken from the platform of the following passenger train as we sat near MP 12.2 looking across the canyon of the Skaguay River which is some 1000 ft below the train clinging to the mountain side of the White Pass' "high line."
