Sistersuzey posted on Music  Interesting. I was listening to West Side Story the other day, when this song played. This is from 1961. Funny (sad ) how more some things have changed, the more they are the same.

Sistersuzey posted on Suggested Viewing/Listening  I've copied the first comment after the video as an explanation. "In August of 1941, more than 23,000 Hungarian Jews are murdered by the Gestapo in occupied Ukraine. All told, more than 600,000 Jews had been murdered in Ukraine by war's end. I believe Miss Simonova's drawings were in remembrance of that time. Very very sad days for them." http://blog.petflow.com/she-walked-out-on-stage-and-blew-eve

MeiDei  Very moving & brought back to mind my uncle's wife who was Ukrainian. Fortunately her father got his family out before the atrocities & WWI; her shared memories of their escape & that which led to it remain with me today with sadness.

Thanks for posting, it's well that we should remember.

Sistersuzey posted on Pet Peeves  While this is not one of my Pet Peeves, it is a Peeve none the less. I just finished reading an article on the controversial win of the Gold Medalist in Women's Figure Skating. In the "olden days" the judges held up cards with the score they had given for the whole world to see. It was almost a given that each judge would score their country's competitor just a bit higher than they may have deserved, but because it was so public I think it forced the judges to keep their biases in check. Seems to me that if they did it the old way it would be quite clear if shenanigans were or were not going on.

Charactercounts  That's a great point. I do remember them holding up cards. Dick Button said he wasn't going to do this winter olympics because the scoring system is so awful.

Sistersuzey posted on Recipes  This is a recipe I tweaked from one in the Hershey's Chocolate Cookbook. I like it because it's easy and you can make it an advance if you have company coming and garnish it just before serving. Warning - it is very rich.

Frosty Mocha Pie

8 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
1 3/4 cup Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup Kahlua
1 tsp instant coffe
8 oz. Whipped Topping (cool whip )
1 Oreo Cookie Pie Crust

Put chocolate chips and whipping cream in microwave safe bowl. Stir. Melt in microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring after a couple of minutes until smooth and glossy and the chips are all melted. Remove and stir in the instant coffee and the Kahlua into the chocolate. Set aside. In a larger bowl, beat the cream cheese until fluffy. Add the chocolate mixture to the cream cheese and beat until well mixed. Gently fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Pour that into the Oreo Pie crust and cover with the lid. Freeze until ready to serve.

When ready to serve:

Top frozen slices with whipped cream, toasted slivered almonds and grated dark chocolate. Recently we have begun drizzling the slices with caramel sauce as well, but it is just fine without.

Sistersuzey  Well... there are a few calories ... but.... I do use cool whip at 25 calories per tbs as opposed to whipped cream at 52 calories per tbs for the main pie. I am trying to do my part in keeping things healthy here!!!

Sistersuzey posted on Gardening & Landscaping  Years ago, I had a friend from the Senior Center, who gave me a cutting of this plant. She said it was a cutting from her Mother's plant which had grown in her house since she was a little girl. This is the first year it has bloomed for me and has a lot more coming. I guess with patience and the right conditions anything can happen.

Hollyhock  Do the blooms have a sweet fragrance? It sort of looks like a Hoya plant that I used to have.

Sistersuzey  They do have a slight fragrance and it is a Hoya. I had been growing it in the house and finally moved it to my little greenhouse last fall. It seems very happy now.

Sistersuzey posted on Jokes  The Lie Clock...

A man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him..

He asked, 'What are all those clocks?'

St. Peter answered, 'Those are Lie-Clocks.
Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock.

Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move.'

'Oh,' said the man, 'whose clock is that?'

'That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie.'

'Incredible,' said the man. 'And whose clock is that one?'

St. Peter responded, 'That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life.'

'Do you have one for President Obama?' asked the man.

Obama's clock is in Jesus' office.
He's using it as a ceiling fan.

Sistersuzey posted on Recipes  A favorite brownie in our house is Turtle Brownies. They can be easy (as in a box mix ) or more complicated (as in your favorite basic scratch recipe ) as you like. At work I use the Hershey's Best Brownie recipe but at home, if I'm in a hurry, I have used a box mix. Make brownies that fit a 9x9 pan. While brownies are baking:

Melt the caramels with the butter and milk in the microwave for three minutes, stirring every 30 second until smooth and creamy. As soon as brownies are through baking, pour caramel mixture over the top. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips and then the pecans and let cool. I will admit I don't measure the chocolate chips or the nuts, I just sprinkle until I'm happy with it.

25 caramels (Kraft Caramels )
1/2 stick butter (1/4 cup )
2 T milk
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans (you can use whatever nuts suit your fancy )
