Linder posted on Main Page The Lobby  Anxious to watch the Sunday talk shows. How do you suppose little David will spin the recent Benghazi and IRS revelations?

Linder posted on Gardening & Landscaping  Gramps brought his new Dixon zero-radius mower home today. He is retiring this year at 76 and mowing will be his job. He also announced he had bought another rifle today. I told him we were going to talk about him turning over his check book. Not really, he's worked hard all these years and hope he has many more to enjoy.

Surfhut  I am seriously impressed with Gramps. Rock on Gramps!

Linder  Oh, thank you, Surfhut. He really is a lovely man and I know from your remarks that you had one, too. We were married 50 years ago, March 10, and from that day on he has thought the sun rose and set on me and because I know and appreciate that I have never taken advantage. We never know what tomorrow will bring but for today, life is good.

BirdsNest  Linder, is Gramps going to be mowing lawns for his paycheck or just your lawn?? Boys and their toys!! Hope he enjoys retirement-keep him busy so he will continue with good health, don't give him a chance to miss work. Like potato chips-guns....you just can't stop at one. "Two is one and one is none."

Linder  No, won't be going into the mowing business...just our own. Went today for his 3 yr post-bypass check and the heart doc gave him the same blunt advice about retiring. Keep busy or you will die.

Linder posted on Pet Peeves  This time I have a real pet peeve. The use of the word gentleman when it isn't deserved. It happens all the time on the news when a lawbreaker/criminal is referred to as a "gentleman". It happened three times in succession today ... referring to the two terror suspects as gentlemen. Made me talk to the TV.

Straitpath  I saw the same broadcast. I asked my husband why the commentator didn't refer to the suspect as a man rather than a gentleman.

Gerty  I am just as curious, Linder. I should hope he had a face lift to make himself feel better about his appearance. But I doubt it.

Balogreene  Why do women have face lifts? Coco Chanel famously said she had earned every wrinkle and every gray hair, and refused to cover them up.

I was born the year I was born, nothing can change that, my face reflects my life's challenges, and easy times both. Why would I want to lie?

Surfhut  Linder, I guess men have facelifts for the same reasons women do. Vanity, Insecurity, Self-Delusion.

Balo, you said "my face reflects my life's challenges, and easy times both." That was inspired/inspiring.

My hair is gray. Most of my wrinkles are either wisdom lines or laugh lines. Women in my family have actually told me that, at my age, I am a fool to not color my hair or wear a lot of makeup. I just smile and nod and refrain from telling them that it is really ridiculous to try looking like a twenty-something when the world clearly sees you are fifty-something.

Gerty  Now wait just a minute!

To all the gentleladies posting above: Cosmetic surgery (major or minor ) is, like exposing the age of a woman, a delicate topic. Why does anyone 'go under the knife'? There are all sorts of reasons---and I believe we should not make judgments on personal choices.

Would you call it vanity if your neighbor has a manicure or (Heaven forbid ) a pedicure? No---most here would agree that it depends on a person's choice of how much she likes to care for her body and how much she is able (willing ) to spend!

With the ease and popularity of plastic surgery today, it is a matter of choice for a woman to go from manicure to pedicure; face cream to face lift! ;- )

Linder  Gerty, You are right...shouldn't make judgments...and it's a double standard but I have different expectations about vanity from men and women...will never understand why a mature man wants to erase his life from his face.

Gerty  How kind of you to make such a comment, Linder.

Perhaps my attitude towards this topic is the result of having been around for so long. But I learn something new every day. For instance, my soon-to-be-ex-brother-in-law (try saying that fast with marbles in your mouth! ) recently had liposuction around his copious gut. Now, I ask you.....what on earth is going on?!? It has a basis, I think, in how one wishes others to see themselves. Is it a form of lying? Perhaps. But I still comb my hair and wash my face upon arising even from a nap----I don't have to look like I've been sleeping; I can do something to improve my appearance and give myself a bit of pride in how I look.

However, like every thing else---we can go too far. Joan Rivers--Yikes!!!

Balogreene  Oh yeah! I sounded so good. I'm pretty close to going to a plastic surgeon for an "eye lift". My eyelids are sagging, and blocking my sight, so I find that more of a necessity than vanity. I also have skin tags I want off, that is vanity.

The gray hair and wrinkles can stay. One of my sister says she'd never get rid of her gray. When she was a young teacher parents used to question her knowledge and maturity. Once she started going gray, they quit.

Linder posted on Health & Diet  Gramps had the second cataract surgery today...doing fine. I sat in the waiting room with his cousin who had driven his friend for the same surgery. Later I realized that almost all of our conversation had been about health concerns. That can become a bad habit and I vow to not let it happen again.

How many years ago...I don't remember...reading his remarks as I lurked over Lucianne.    Linder posted on Nostalgia  Just finished my all time favorite meal...hotdog on a bun with ketchup and yellow mustard, plain potato chips and an ice cold Pepsi. Knowing I was a Pepsi drinker many many years ago, my son dropped off a Pepsi Throwback for me to to try. Is made with real sugar. Loved it. I know, I know...it's all bad stuff but I only have this meal about three times a year....which is probably why it still tastes good.

Rake King  Let's face it, who would go to a baseball game and order a ham sandwich? That would be un-American...no matter what the diet police and Mayor Bloomberg have to say. The Mrs. and I refer to that as our "picnic lunch", even when we have it in January or February.

Balogreene  Here in NOVA a place has opened up, "Windy City Red Hots". Oh my goodness, Chicago street vendor hot dogs, nothing better. Vienna beef hot dog, ploschman's mustard, neon green pickle relish, a tomato wedge, a pickle, a hot pepper, on a bun, with celery salt. All of a sudden I'm back at Navy Pier, circa 1975.

We don't go often, but mom and I both love the memories.

Linder posted on Coffee Klatch  I went to our local high school yesterday where Senator Grassley was holding a Q&A session with the students. The Government Class (Republican teacher ) kids asked good questions. He didn't mince words in pointing out the lack of leadership from the President in leading us out of this quagmire. There are 99 counties in our state and he has visited each county every year since becoming senator. Sen. Harkin comes back to Iowa only for photo ops and fund raisers. I'd bet he will live in the D.C. area when he retires in two years and never return to Iowa. Grassley will return to his farm when that time comes. Harkin is a hack politician who went to Washington never having held a job in the private sector and became a rich man. Sen. Grassley is and will always be a farmer.

Rollingcow  I've been to several of his Town Meetings, Linder, he's always as honest as he can be and if he doesn't know an answer he has an aide take your question, name, address and e-mail then gets back to you with an answer. Harkin always sends a form letter. Grassley isn't perfect, but he's a hell of a guy.

Linder  He didn't have the answer to my question about the shortage of ammunition and why Homeland Security was buying it and he asked his aide to make a note of it. He asked where I had read that ...it was the Washington Post via Lucianne. Mrs. Cow, I'm not surprised that you attend his town hall meetings. The very first Lincoln Day Dinner I attended years and years ago and the first I ever heard of him, Grassley was the only Republican in the U.S. congressional delegation from Iowa...both senators and six of the then seven representatives were Democrat. However, we controlled all executive offices of the State House at the time. Go figure.
