Easy money lures an American border patrol officer into his partner's sideline of smuggling illegals into Texas. Charlie Smith barely scrapes by on his low salary, but his hectoring wife, Marcy, is anxious to move up in the world, so he takes a new position as a border patrol agent alongside the hair-trigger Cat. Soon, Charlie is a reluctant party to Cat's smuggling and other petty criminal actions, but when the corrupt agent sets his avaricious sights on a poor illegal immigrant and her newborn baby, Charlie's moral code returns.

Framed for the murder of her husband, Libby Parsons survives the long years in prison with two burning desires sustaining her -- finding her son and solving the mystery that destroyed her once-happy life. Standing between her and her quest, however, is her parole officer Travis Lehman. Libby poses a challenge to the cynical officer, one that forces him to face up to his own failings while pitting him against his superiors and law enforcement colleagues.

Richdet  Definitely Benicio del Toro looking sharp in the foreground. The femme fatale -- she has to be the femme fatale in this kind of genre movie -- looks like Madeline Stowe to me (she has turned up as a guest programmer on TCM of late. Pretty sure that's her ). Whoever she is, look out boys. She's got to be trouble.

MeiDei  Each above have been correctly named, the film is "China Moon" and the husband who was done in is none other than Charles Dance.; nicely solved you two.

MeiDei posted on Movies & Reviews  Remember this actor?
   Wednesday at 00:38 EST .

Richdet  Yes. He is Vince Edwards, star on tv of the medical show "Ben Casey" in the sixties. I believe "Ben Casey" and "Dr. Kildare" (with Richard Chamberlain ) debuted about the same time. Suddenly there was a rage for doctor dramas and both shows thrived, one not stepping on the popularity of the other.
Wednesday at 08:24 EST .

Richdet  Correction: suddenly there was a rage for hunky medical dramas. Vince and Richard were familiar faces in the fan mags once their Casey and Kildare alter egos hit the small screen. Kildare had his wise mentor Dr. Gillespie (Raymond Massey ) and Casey had one too, Dr. Zorba (Sam Jaffe ). Needless to say, Raymond and Sam were not the reason so many women tuned in to these shows week after week.
Wednesday at 08:30 EST .

MeiDei  While best known for his TV role as Dr. Ben Casey, he was in over 30 movies; the last one in 1995 a year before he died at age 67. Rich wins this one in a heartbeat : )

Tony Manetta runs an unsuccessful Miami hotel, on which he can't meet the payments. Another liability is his weakness for dames (Shirl, his sexy current flame, is even less responsible than Tony ). But a solid asset is Ally, his sensible 12-year-old son. When Tony wants stolid brother Mario to bail him out again, Mario makes conditions: give up Ally, or at least get married to a "nice, quiet little woman" of his selection. Tony and Ally just play along to be diplomatic, but when the woman in question proves

Richdet  Let's start with who isn't in this picture. Frank Sinatra, who was the star of the movie, "A Hole in the Head." The kid is Eddie Hodges. And Thelma Ritter and Edward G. Robinson are to the left and right. The other man certainly looks familiar, but that's it.

This is the movie where the hit song "High Hopes" comes from. Sinatra sings it to, or maybe with, the kid. I don't recall. But it went from being a kiddie-ish pop song to a theme for the JFK campaign a year later, via Sinatra.

"Just what makes that little old ant think he'll move that rubber tree plant" -- why, he has "high hopes" of course. I still can conjure up the lyrics. I saw the movie as a kid and got the 45. I fear this song is embedded in my head now for days to come.

StormCnter  Rich, my son-in-law calls those annoying melodies that play over and over a "song worm". Last night, for some terrible reason, the one playing in my own head was "After Sweet Memories, Play Born to Lose Again".
Wednesday at 17:06 EST .

MeiDei  Rich has named most, including title, the cast along w/those mentioned: Eleanor Parker, Keenan Wynn, Carolyn Jones, Dub Taylor & Ruby Dandridge. "High Hopes" can be found on the music wall, lyrics shown & yes, the little boy sings too; I invite to go listen & sing along. There is some commercial on TV lately that features Frank singing the first chorus - we gets our inspiration wheres we can (I'm tesing spellcheck here ).
