Faith

Jerico  I'm asking for prayers for my cousin Angie who is undergoing chemo at the NIH to kill off her immune system and John, her husband, who is there with her. This is day two and in a few days she'll receive a stem cell transplant. Please pray that they will be comforted during this horrible treatment and that she will be cured by the transplant. It's so hard for him to watch her go through this.

Jerico  She is through the worst of it God willing. She was able to keep down some coffee this morning and is getting some sleep. Thank you for your prayers. A few more days of chemo then she'll be in a fair fight. I'm sorry EC. I added you to my prayers also.

Jerico  I'm sorry EC I don't know. She was much more open the first time but after it metastasized she rarely talks about it at all. What little I know is from John letting the cousins/siblings know. The stem cell transplant was created for her from her own cells about a year and a half ago. I hope that your treatment is successful. Where are you receiving your treatment? Angie's doctor is through Barnes Jewish Advanced Medicine. My brother's doctor is there also.

ALynnMcW  Prayers for Angie and all those who love and care for her. Had stem cell transplant myself in 2008. The chemo side effects were not fun. And longer lasting than I expected. Prayer the best remedy. That said don't try to tough it out. Ask for help to lessen the side effects. I'll check back to see how you are all doing. I will be praying.

Jerico  Well we are in a wait and see stage. At first it did not seem like good news. Angie decided to quit treatment and pursue alternative lifestyle. However she is still going to NIH for booster shots and we discovered that the rate of growth had stopped. Whether it was the recent changes or the stem cell treatment I am just thankful. I thank you all for your prayers and ask that you keep it up. Because they are at the bottom of every good thing.

Jerico  I was just wondering if anyone has "given anything up for Lent?" I know that there used to be quite a few Catholic LDOTTERS.

MeiDei  Old habits are hard to break even when you hit the age of no longer being compelled to give up something for Lent. I've 'given up grains & dairy' for the next two weeks - it's good to be during Lent as I'll be faithful about it; then I get the pleasure of reintroducing one food at a time to isolate any sensitivities - or what is now termed as 'triggers'. I still keep Wed & Fri as meatless days - old habits category.

StormCnter  Southern Baptist here, so I'm speaking without full knowledge of exactly what faiths or denominations observe Lent. But it's not just Catholics, is it? Don't Episcopalians also participate in Lent?

Jerico  I think that there is a sort of autonomy in that community but I am Catholic so I haven't experienced it first hand. Lenten sacrifice does not seem to be a major part of the faith but is a good thing to participate in perhaps.

MeiDei  My mother's BF was what was then termed High Episcopalian - very close to Catholic. Was stranded once in Indiana due to a blizzard, had to stay over an extra day & we went to church, wasn't til the end of service that I found we were in a Lutheran church. My father's mother was Eastern Orthodox which is very similar to Greek Orthodox. I taught CCD Bible Study for over 20 years, one of the good experiences was a dad who informed (warned was his word ) me that his being Jewish his daughters had been taught that as well since his wife was Catholic. He was happily surprised when I immediately volunteered him to take over the class when the Seder was going to be the subject. His wife was very ill & grew incapacitated over time, he faithfully brought the girls to church & participated in all but communion; he did say there was much similarity between his religion & ours. Having friends of many denominations is a blessing when we're all standing on the Word in mutual encouragement & Faithfulness, putting aside that which would divide us - after all we are each a part of the Body of Christ - that's how I see it PTL.

Jerico  I've been to Eastern Rite Masses and they are very beautiful. On the order of an Orthodox Rite but they accept the primacy of the Pope. And I've been to various other services, Baptist, Presbyterian in Scotland and a couple of others. I've not been to any Jewish service but of course the Church flows from Judaism. I agree that we should look to what binds us together whenever we can. So how did the Seder lesson turn out?

MeiDei  The Seder lesson went very well, he was patient, explained the why's & what's of each item; almost all the 7th graders were engaged by his gentle yet enthusiastic demeanor; his daughter's place in class improved as misconceptions dissolved.

Escaped commieny  Hi Mei, my mom taught CCD too. In the summer all the cousins stayed at the 'homestead' and Auntie didn't drive, so we walked to the Greek Catholic church, the kids loved the bread cube soaked in wine instead of our normal dry wafer at the Roman Catholic home church. We were such little twits, but the elders made sure we received the Body Of Christ. DH was a stanch Missouri Synod Lutheran so his uncle said we were a mixed marriage that wouldn't last, that was 47 years ago. He probably rolled over when DH took RCIA to join me in Mass.

Kono  Apologies for being the annoying nerd on this, MeiDei..... Fasting obligations (Ash Wed. and Good Fri. ) end when we turn 60; going meatless on Fridays does not. And giving up a pleasure during Lent is a discretionary penitential discipline that is not regulated by the Church. The recommendation that we do that discipline isn't age-limited like the law of Fasting. (source: usccb.org )

MeiDei  Your comments are welcomed Kono. I've found many "laws" / recommendations to be local or regional i.e., a very large city parish in a big/little State vs. a small strictly ethnic parish in a small/big State; that's my experience. Then again I should be more careful using law, custom / habit, tradition &/or medical dispensation properly - the last thing I'd want to do is lead others astray. I'm going to trust you to keep me humble & corrected. I should qualify this post - all my drs. do not wish me to fast (or abstain from meat ) at all as I'm way underweight w/medical issues.

Tulsa  I pray with all my heart our Sweet Lord Jesus will show each of you how to surrender your fears and anxiety and rest in Him.

He can't work until you let go. The sooner you surrender, the sooner His perfect peace fills you.

I read Shimmer's note on the main board and I told her I added her name to the Faith Wall at the Connection. It was the article about the loss of Brenda Buttner(sp )of Fox Business.

The Lord knows. That is all that matters. She will 'feel' our prayers. There were many on that thread with words of encouragement.

Calvinesq  Some random thoughts for this Thanksgiving:

We hear a lot of noise these days regarding "privilege" or "white privilege." It is used to keep a lot of people silent about their beliefs and values.

The concept, in my view, is misguided and wrong. I don't know about this so-called "privilege" with which "they" want to keep me silent.

I do know that what I have, even what I may have earned, is nothing without God. God has blessed me with a wonderful family, a means to make a living and a multitude of friends, both believers and non-believers. God's grace has indeed been shed on me. My response is not to denigrate my privilege, but to thank God profusely for all his blessings, with humility, praise and utmost respect. Without God's grace, I would have nothing.

MeiDei  It's been 2 years since my son had an old wound reopen requiring daily visits from Visiting Nurses Association (VNA )to treat it. 4 months ago we were down to thrice weekly w/the VNA & now back to daily due to a "tunneling" issue. Today is the 24 month anniversary --- prayers for his full recovery are appreciated, it's hard to see him removed from enjoying life outside of his room & brief excursions to doctors & hospitals - a sense of humor (even irreverent at times ) and faith has got us this far.

BirdsNest  About once a week I get really sad, missing Hagar and not wanting to come home . My house is not empty, there are parrots and Melvin(Hagars bird ), but Hagar is not here. I should be getting used to this. Still there are people that ask after him. I am happy to know so many people cared about him, but they get embarrassed when they are told he has passed. That doedn' t upset me at the time. I don't want to make them cringe. Yesterday my friend who is an EMT called me on her way home from a 24 hr shift. She mentioned her partner had a call, the person had died
Later she called to tell me the person that had passed was 33 yrs old and his 4 yr old called 911. The wife was at work. I feel very badly for this young woman. She is so devastated. I have been praying for her and her son.

I will have to settle for a cyber hug. But my thoughts and prayers are not confined by the mundane...may you know and feel the comfort of the love of Hagar and the Lord.
