Surfhut  The Kate Smith video and history posted below by EC is very important, IMHO. I've known the story and watched the video many times over the years. Today, I was brought to my knees. Andrew Breitbart was correct when he said (paraphrasing ) that popular culture drives the media and political narratives.

We have some cultural and media driving work to do. I'm in.

Lonestar Jack  Main Stream Media didn't mention the fact that Gov Quinn from Illinois will be relinquishing his office soon when the new Republican Guv gets sworn in. What is really newsworthy is the fact that he won't be going to jail to accompany the past Democratic Ill Guvs.

Escaped commieny  God Bless America - The Story

Frank Sinatra considered Kate Smith the best singer of her time, and said that when he and a million other guys first heard her sing "God Bless America" on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as they wiped away a tear or two.
Here are the facts... The link at the bottom will take you to a video showing the very first public singing of "GOD BLESS AMERICA". But before you watch it, you should also know the story behind the first public showing of the song.
The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression.Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid we'd have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans. This was the era just before TV, when radio shows were HUGE, and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their
favorite entertainers, and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith.
Kate was also large; plus size, as we now say, and the popular phrase still used today is in deference to her, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings".Kate Smith might not have made it big in the age of TV, but with her voice coming over the radio, she was the biggest star of her time.
Kate was also patriotic. It hurt her to see Americans so depressed and afraid of what the next day would bring . She had hope for America , and faith in her fellow Americans. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to the famous American song-writer, Irving Berlin (who also wrote "White Christmas" ) and asked him to write a song that would make Americans feel good again about their country. When she described what she was looking for, he said he had just the song for her.
He went to his files and found a song that he had written, but never published, 22 years before - way back in 1917. He gave it to her and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. She and Irving Berlin were not sure how the song would be received by the public, but both agreed they would not take any profits from God Bless America . Any profits would go to the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years, the Boy Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties from this song.
This video starts out with Kate Smith coming into the radio studio with the orchestra and an audience. She introduces the new song for the very first time, and starts singing. After the first couple verses, with her voice in the background still singing, scenes are shown from the 1940 movie, "You're In The Army Now." At the 4:20 mark of the video you see a young actor in the movie, sitting in an office, reading a paper; it's Ronald Reagan.

Bettijo  Thanks! I had chills go up and down my spin as I watched this. It was all I could do to keep from crying. It breaks my heart; the patricians we had back them and the hatred of our country exhibited today. I sent it on to everybody I know.

Clipped wings  We will be making an exception and try to go to a local theater for this film. From reports of those who have been, they say that at the end of the movie, the audience is completely silent, some cases some applause, but mostly reverent silence. A testimony to an extraordinary piece of work to leave people so moved. I think the fantastic turnout it is a sign of the country's mood.

Balogreene  Mildred, I think we need to know more. What kind of computer are you using, how old is it, do you know how much RAM it has (I always have to look mine up ).

I have a hard time on my iPad, but my MacBook Pro works just fine.

August9  Mildred, The past few months I have experienced trouble loading posts. It is sporadic-- one minute, all is well, and then it takes 20-30 seconds to get a post up!

I have two laptops, and have set one next to another, clicking on a post simultaneously.

Both computers act the same---either instantly loading, or taking forever. This very unscientific trial leads me to believe that the problem is either, or my router.
At times, it is unbearable, and I go elsewhere. Usually, 10-15 minutes later, all is well!

Mildred  This is a recent problem with Lucianne, although it does happen from time to time. Since this is the only site I have the problem with, I have to believe it is Lucianne. I have an HP laptop that is completely up to date with Windows 7 and Explorer 11. This has been a problem for about a week now and it's very annoying.

Lonestar Jack  It is a matter of bandwidth and what is being transmitted.
It is like a super highway that has become a mainstream for slow moving commercial carriers.
Drudge Report has gotten to be the same as they cater to more and more video driven ads, and the constant feeding data back the the advertisers for analysis.
Then there is he fact that there is a lot more checking for spam and possible security data gathering.
Until recently you could watch the status bar in the bottom left corner of the screen and see the different connections being made and who the ad data was going to, but that has been shifted out of your vision.
Targeted ads are here to stay on free sites. Did you wonder how all of a sudden your search for pink beach balls made ads for beach balls in your local area show up on different sites? That is target ads at its best/worst and much more traffic on the super highway.

Expect more of the same until the web site owners go back to KISS or Keep It Simple Stupid!!
